Rescued a cat

My husband found a cat probably abandoned by someone... now we love cats, but we’ve had 2and both ended up being knocked down so we decided that it wasn’t fair to have any more, as the two we had were not happy inside, constantly making breaks for the door as soon as we would come in etc we spent half our life’s chasing them to catch them.

Anyway this little mite is lovely: she’s about 6 months. But she’s blind in one eye and she’s sick: we’ve had her sprayed in the vets, antibiotic injection and I’m giving her antibiotics every day too. Her chest is very rattly but we are doing the best we can for her. She couldn’t be vaccinated when she’s sick.

The thing is I’m not sure we can or should keep her... we have a 3 month old and we are so close to the road. She’s very placid now, but that may change as she gets stronger. But if I give her to a rescue would anyone adopt her? But is keeping her outside (once neutered) really an option either? If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it.

I’d email or call <snip> (or equivalent where you live) and they will tell you if they will take her. Plenty of people adopt cats with a disability such as blindness as I wouldn’t let that put you off. The <snip> would look after her until she is better and well enough to be adopted. Just explain you rescued her but can’t keep her and aren’t just dumping a cat you don’t want.

Same situation with me I love cats but my last one was knocked down as we aren’t far from a road so won’t get another while I live where I do.

We recently adopted from a shelter and whilst there met a dote of a cat with both ears amputated due to sun damage. When we asked the volunteers there if there would be any difficulty getting her adopted out they laughed (nicely) at us and told us that the animals with the sob stories are always first to be reserved. Humans are suckers for a sob story. (it's true too, we seriously considered adopting her cos she was so freaking cute with her little missing ears).

OP why not keep her until she has recovered - if shes blind in one eye and not in great health, when shes neutered and recovered, she might be one of those cats who are very happy to be an indoor cat - dont do anything until you see how she is when recovered and matured...

whatever you decide to do, huge kudos to you for rescuing and taking care of her

Ya I will wait and see how she goes before I make any decision. She’s doing quite a bit of hissing at me at the moment. I need to bring her back to vet for another dose on Friday and then if she’s better I’ll get her neutered and vaccinated when she’s off the antibiotics. My oldest little girl adores her already so that’s probably our decision made but look will still wait and see new baby and new pet aren’t exactly the best combination either.
