Italy: Turin and then south

I am heading to Italy next week. From Turin I hope to head south to Lecce, so almost the length of the country.
I am looking for advice on cities as stop off points on the way south. I have already decided on Florence but I am then also considering
    Cremona or Palma,
    Pescara or Cassino,
    Foggia , Bari

Then returning via Salerno and Naples, with Pompei/Herculeleum , to Livorno to Genoa.

Any advice on nice cities to see would be great. I am more interested in the historic than the night life.

    thanks

    Thanks for that suggestion Lex,

I need to break up journey into approximate 400 km steps. I am travelling from Grenoble via Turin and thinking of stopping at Piacenza or Parma. Then Bologna and then a few days in Florence. ( ultimately I hope to reach Lecce )
Piacenza fits better in terms of distance but I wonder would Parma be more interesting?
I will arrange for a few days in Florence but should I do the same for Bologna?

I might also make it to Sicily. I wonder if anyone has any experience on ferries etc. I will be travelling on motorcycle.

Finally, I hope to return via Pompeii and Herculaneum. Any advice regarding getting around those sites. I will park up motorcycle and use public transport. I would use guided tour if that was available.

    Thanks for any help

Hi Op, how are you getting the bike to Italy?

Seems like a nice trip you've planned.

Looking at Milan to Dubrovnik crossing to Bari and heading up to North Italy for next year.
