I was looking to do some voiceover work and a website says that I'll need to provide a VAT number before commencing. What is this?

Keep in mind I don't have a business and have never worked.

If you have a company which earns over 37.5 k per year, you need to register for VAT.

Tell them you're a sole trader.

The problem here is they don't really understand what they're doing.

Not quite. It doesn't matter whether you are a sole trader or company - the threshold remains €37,500 for services.

If it looks like you will have a turnover more than the threshold then you must register for VAT and start charging it.

If you think your total sales will amount to less than €37.5k in the year then contact the company and tell you are not registered for VAT at the moment and will not be charging them any VAT on your invoices unless you register in the future.

Any experienced person looking after payments in a company will understand.

Yeah my suggestion was more like "try to short circuit the person demanding a VAT number by telling them you're a sole trader".

My logic is based on the belief that the person doesn't really understand what they're doing, so perhaps if they think you're a sole trader they'll drop their VAT demand.
