A friend was telling me that her car failed NCT because the heater fan did not work at its max position ( does work at lower settings ).

Is this a case of overzealous interpretation of the NCT rule book ?

Didnt know that they checked things like this. Do they check if the cigarette lighter works ?.

Seems like a world away from https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2058007257 which passed spot-on-no-bother

Nothing in the testing manual about the heater at all.

    Your friend is talking rubbish.

The windscreen demister has been checked for the last year and was part of the EU directive for roadworthiness 2014/45 new regulations . It is in the manual under windscreen and wipers section 9 . Although this case is overzealous , the demister is ok once working at all , that means at any fan speed or if there is a heated windscreen operational

My fathers car failed the NCT a couple of years ago because of the reg plate. The plate was fine except the Irish lettering wasn't on it. They do fail you for some really stupid reasons.

And why did he go out of his way to get a plate without Irish on it, because it takes some doing... This has been a point of failure since day one, so not like it's something unexpected.

I did actually look through the document for any reference to heater, blower or fan and found nothing.

You are right though, it is mentioned under demister, although not blowing on full speed is should not be considered a fail according to the guidance.

The requirements for the reg plate are clear, all you have to do is have a plate that meets the requirements.

I found it by searching fan.
    Demisting/ventilation system (fan) inoperative.

If the fan doesn't work, then its inoperative.
But it's not clear from the OP what exactly happens are full power. Is it just knocking off?

Wonder did he just flick the switch straight to max speed and so didn't see that it worked at lower speed.

Thank you all for your input.

I'll see her again in the next few days and will check it out for myself.

If the fan does work at lower speeds, what is involved in putting the case that the cert should have been issued ?

If I press the windscreen demisting button in my car it goes to max setting on the fan. Maybe if that button stops working then it would be a fail? Just a thought, could have been the issue here, especially if the car has a specific demisting button like mine.

On some cars the fan control has an indication to set to max for demisting, and in cars with climate control the fan gets set to max, so in that respect it isn't working correctly.
    Over-zealous yes, technically correct possibly.

The mode or zone control and fan operation are checked . The dial on the left gives you the zone , mode etc control , the middle gives you the fan speed . The max speed or here number 4 often has a demist label beside it to show the recommended demist setting (same for the temperature dial). If theres is any air blowing up onto the windscreen the car should pass as it is technically working . Also if the car has a heated windscreen that suffices

It was bought from the dealer like that. He never noticed the missing Irish lettering.
