    Hi,
So as is normal my car never came with a spare, and I would like to be able to carry one but I'm getting confused with names.

Wheel, tyre and rim - I'm not sure what's what.

Moreover I own a spare 'tyre' by that I mean the rubber thing, not the metal part. I've been told to pick up the missing part at a local 'dump' for €35 ish. Do I ask for a rim? What numbers/sizes do I need to know?

You need to know the stud pattern for the wheel.
    It'll be something like 5 x 112 or 4 x 100.
And then the size 15",16" 17" etc
I'd go to the breakers and buy a wheel of the same model car.
    What car is it ?
Are you sure its the right tyre? If it is it will have the wheel size on it, R18/225/40 for example is an 18".

Thank you, its a VW Jetta, yup its the right tyre bought from a garage. I have the "R18/225/40" numbers printed on the side of the tyre, not sure about the stud pattern.

Plenty of space savers on eBay

Space savers are usually get you from A to B and much narrower than a standard tyre. What size is in boot could it fit an ordinary wheel off your car in there or small size and needs a space saver hence the name.
Reading back you bought a rubber tyre and need a rim of metal or sports rim of alloy it seems. Some cars only give 4 alloys and steel wheel in boot.

You are looking for a wheel rim to mount your new tyre to but scrapyard will only sell whole wheel to you.
