Re-importing Irish car - plate

My car was exported from the South to NI where I bought it, VRT was already claimed back. It was a UK car at new, not registered in UK at that time, straight on Irish plates.

I've had it two years in UK and I'm over here again on a temp. contract for six months but I was wondering if I did re-register it back in Ireland if I stay longer, would it get it's original Irish plate back?

It was a cool plate YEAR-COUNTY-4 example 04-D-4 but from what I've read it would get YEAR-COUNTY-12XXXXX ie 06-D-120205 or something random in the imported cars bracket in the 120000 series.

I have the original Irish plates not that that matters. NCTS/VRT has the car as 'scrapped' too, which it most definitely isn't. Also I stay in a different County from where the car was Irish registered and I understand you can only register a car in the county in which you live.

If the car was exported from Ireland and VRT claimed back, then upon registering in Ireland you will be asked to pay VRT again (or provide documentation to confirm you are exempt) and you will be assigned new registration number.

Are you sure about the new number? We don't reissue numbers so the original will still be available to be issued. And if a new number is issued it would be a way for people to change their county, which IIRC isn't allowed.

A friend of mine just imported a car from the UK that was previously Irish and he got the old plate back.

VRT wasn’t reclaimed in this instance so I’m not sure whether that effects or not but I really can’t see them issueing a new (different) reg.

If that was the case some reg snobs on high on motors could export and re import for the sake of getting a D reg etc

I don't think that ever happened before...

It's such a rare scenario that there won't be a hard rule
really. Depending on a person dealing with, you might get a new numer or not...

Far as I know, the scenarios given by Cinio and Limerick Man are both correct.

I wouldn't say it isn't allowed, but rather that it was impossible to be done.
However since introduction on VRT export refund scheme it seems to be possible.
Very few people availing of it though, as it involves lots of hassle, cost, and possibly even knowledge that it can be done which most people don't posses.

They would if they know it was possible.

If VRT wasnt claimed during export you can contact the motor tax office to reactivate the old reg.

If it was claimed you have to go through the VRT process (either pay or use exemption) and you will be assigned a new reg
