I am due to inherit it in the next 5 years but I have had no part in its running for the last 10 or more. There doesn't seem to be an optimistic future in beef farming and even if there was it doesn't appeal to me. There is no one else to inherit it so if I don't take it, it will probably be sold off - something I'm against as its been in the family for generations.

What is the best thing I can do with the land one it passes to me that will benefit me and the environment? I'm thinking forestry/biofuel but I want to know if there are other options. Loans is on the west coast of Ireland and has been drained over the years but still had bad ground in parts, guessing 50% is good/high quality farmland.

Investigate with forestry companies the possibility of planting the wetter parts.
Put the rest into extensive beef or graze some dairy heifers with low inputs ie little fert etc. All good for environment.

It might be no harm contacting these guys.

Maybe even attend a workshop or two just to get an idea of the "lie of the land".
