I've a 2000 Yaris with a rattling timing chain, would it be worth replacing the timing chain? One mechanic said I'd have to get another engine and that it would be cheaper to buy another Yaris but I've replaced a lot of parts on this one over the last few years. It's a 1.0 L petrol.

I'd keep driving it until it get so bad I'd have to scrap car. But that's me.

keep fresh oil in it and topped up and drive on. Turn up the volume on the radio.

Hard one to call. Hard to justify spending that money on a 19 year old Yaris. It might be more wise to put that money away and save it towards a new car in the medium to long term. Just drive the Yaris on as is until the chain gives on it and then replace the car.

I would get a second hand engine about 250, and then 300 to fit, at least another couple of years. My friend got last one in ashbourne, probably maynooth is the best to go.

I priced a timing chain kit on the internet from €70-€130 and my mechanic doesn’t charge the earth, probably €80-€100 to fit it. I’ll ask him tomorrow. It would make it saleable again if I were to part with it next year.

Doesn't sound too bad, if you know the car and the rest of it is solid I'd go for it. You could easily spend €300 on another Yaris (or similar) that could end up being a complete lemon.

Replace chain tensioner first. It's not that expensive and may sort things out. :)

I got the chain kit at local motor factors for €150 and my mechanic was to fit it Saturday for €60, went to town today for a bit of shopping when I came out turned the key and all I heard was the chain snapping after a half turn of the engine and it's stuck solid now. Ah well you can't win them all
