Is shared accommodation in Dublin actually fairly reasonable - price wise?

Well - it's expensive. But if you've worked the system nicely - like me - and have acquired HAP (formerly rent allowance - mature student), getting a room in the big city is surprisingly do-able, whilst maintaining student level finances.
