    Hi ,
My fathers Diesel 1.4 08 Mazda 2 failed it’s NCT today due to high smoke . Results : 4.380/m with 1.5 being the limit. His engine temp was @ 81. Air filter already removed for the test . The car doesn’t use oil plus no smoke from exhaust. It maybe has 1/2 of oil too much in the engine as slightly overfilled at recent oil change. He didn’t thrash the car to the test.
I’ve seen posts about adding petrol , Kero, diptane . Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks , Jon

    Hi ,

Sorry what does PSA engine mean, but yeah defo 1.4 engine. Actually don’t think the Mazda 2 diesel was available in Ireland in 2008 as this was brought in new from Fermanagh.
    No smoke at all underload
    Thanks for reply.

What sort of drive does it get?

Bit of petrol or dipetane in the tank and run it hard....

Do you think diptane and a thrashing will bring it down that much, It does seem way over the limit . Also do you put additive in days Prior to test or for duration of test ?
    Thanks for all input /help

What's the driving style and mileage put on it?

    Short runs?

    Hi
1450000 miles and his driving style would never be hard . Always under the limit and never thrashed in lower gears. Thanks

Is he doing short runs. He needs to thrash it a bit at times to clear it....

    Egr could be clogged

Could be anything... turbo, egr, leak at injector nozzle etc. Needs a good drive prior to test in any case, failing that, it can be any of the above.

Drain the extra oil out that can definately cause a problem if there is oil being frothed up.

agree if theres no blue ish smoke coming out of it on normal drives, means most likely you went overboard with oil which is getting into combustion. drain to proper level and give it a bit of a run after to clear any leftover residue. should fly by nct next time.

We've a 10 year old diesel with 300k km on it that just sits on the motorway all day in top gear at around two thousand rpm with very little driving outside of that.

Failed the smoke test with a reading of 9 something a few years ago, and just keeping it down a gear on the motorway so revs get up to around three thousand rpm, with some thrashing it through the gears a week before the test and it's sailed through the test since.

Didn't bother with dipetane or any of those additives, and was skeptical myself that it would be enough to get it under the 1.5 limit, but the continuous low revs motorway driving was causing the build up, and a good occasional thrashing has seen it pass the test the last three years.

Thanks guys. Will follow your advice with draining the 1/2 pint of oil and a good low gear thrashing.
Will update with what’s done and retest or possible retests.

update : emissions down to an incredible 0.23 after an Italian tune up on the way for retest today. (Black smoke noted under thrashing and did clear) Thanks for all help.

Great now he needs to understand it needs a good drive to keep this clear....

Totally agree. Diesels need to be thrashed every now and then. As he now can see from test results. Thanks again to all input
