    Hi all,
What is the general opinion on VW t5s as day vans? Practical or pointless? Worth the insurance cost? Better than a cheap SUV?

    regards

What’s your understanding of day van?

Can you register it as a commercial? I've tried going down the "private" van route..... Not worth it IMO. Either keep it commercial and be aware of what that entails or go for the whole camper conversion.

To me, a day van is a non-camper, with front seats, a rear row of seats, with windows and the cargo space at the rear. Either a shuttle bus / taxi with one row of seats out ( I dont need a seven seater) but I do like a flat cargo space, instead of folding down seats (many of which do not go truly flat). I know several families who have T5s or Vitos as their second family car. I was on holiday in West Cork lately and saw quite a few that were non-campers (no external power and water fittings, no high top, no awning, etc, etc). They seem to be very popular in the North and UK, if the amount of yellow-plate T5s on our roads is anything to go by.

Ok. Here’s my understanding of what’s out there

Caravelle/Transporter Shuttle: Sold ad registered as an MPV. Taxed on emissions or engine cc (if pre July 2008). 3 rows of seats.

Transporter crewcab: sold as commercial vehicle. Rearmost side windows wither glass or metal. €333 tax. Same restrictions on use as other crewcabs.

Camper conversion: no pop top/electrical hookup or water drains required. Needs to have sink/2 ring burner/bed/curtains etc. €102 tax.

Is the 8-seater Transporter Kombi not sold in Ireland? The ones I've seen elsewhere have three rows of seats, but nothing fancy - basic fabric/vinyl bench seats, rubber floor mats, lots of bare metal inside, optional rear ventilation, etc. Not Shuttle/Caravelle-like inside at all. The rear row folds forward and can also be removed entirely, and the middle row can be removed too (though not easily).
