Accused of shoplifting

The other night in Tesco, myself and my partners kids were picking up some snacks for the cinema. We don't buy in the cinema as it is a rip off. Even the price of tickets is outrageous. Being unemployed for several years I rely on social welfare to get by however this was a treat for myself and partners kids.

Anyways, I was scanning various items at the self service checkout and the last item, 3l of cola would not scan. The light turned red and I waited for assistance as per the prompt on the screen. 4 minutes elapsed and still no help. As our film was starting soon, the kids were becoming impatient, and since one of them has ADHD, he doesn't like being told what to do. I paid for all the items except the cola and walked out.

Moments later a member of staff caught up with me and accused me of shoplifting. I explained that I wanted to pay for the cola but the till wouldn't let me and that staff were not interested in helping me and I was late for the cinema.

The member of staff said I had to wait until the guards showed up and that they had footage of me stealing. I explained that I am under no obligation to "wait". He followed me to the cinema but could go no further as I entered the the screen to see the film.

Upon exiting, there was no Tesco staff member or guards so I can assume he didn't have a leg to stand on. However, if the CCTV footage is reported to the guards will there be an issue? I mean it "looks" bad but I was forced into that position, this is neglect on behalf of Tesco and surely does not hold up as shoplifting??

You could have simply left the cola.

Sounds like you took the cola without paying for it? Or did you leave it behind?

Definitely needs clarifying. Although OP and his partner seem to regularly get into situations like this. I’d like to see the CCTV footage myself to see if this actually happened.

As the others have said, you could have left the cola, it is not clear whether you did or not. You should clarify.

If you did take it without paying then you shoplifted. Don’t expect to shop there again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

    What are you looking for?

    Compensation?

    An apology?

Shops are busy and later on are staffed lower.

How could you pay for anything if the cola was blocking the attempt to go further as the red light was lit..... This would mean nothing was paid for.

You took an item and were caught!

Really not seeing what the thread is for.

Can you clarify the importance of referencing your social welfare payments in the first paragraph? Just trying to figure out how that influences your decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,784 ✭✭✭dennyk

You're not clear on whether you actually took the cola or not. If you left it at the scanner and only took the items you actually paid for, then no, you didn't shoplift. If you took it with you, then yes, you stole it and could be prosecuted for the theft if they bother to report it to the guards. "Haha, it didn't scan, so it must be free!" is just a dumb joke, not the law. There is no "neglect"; Tesco is not obligated to sell you cola or any other items and their failure to assist you with your purchase doesn't mean you can just walk out of the store with an item you didn't pay for.

OPs last thread is about damaging someone else’s parked car in a car park and trying to get out of paying for the repairs. Troll alert.

    That's theft.
Of course you were able to pay you were just impatient.

Unfortunately it's life and you will have to wait sometimes.

I'm sure there was a staffed till you could have asked that member for assistance to be called.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,007 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

So you stole the cola, knowing you were stealing it?

No need for anyone to be ‘nice’ about this. It was blatant and a bit scummy.

I’m not sure why you mentioned being unemployed etc - that is completely irrelevant here.

In saying that - you’ll never hear from the situation again but Tesco May have photos of you and ban you etc

Then you should've just left it. If there's no-one behind a bar you can't exactly just pour yourself a free pint because you couldn't order one. The worker was right

trying to paint it as a david and goliath 'woe is me, and them the big corporation, i should be allowed steal cola' , even one of those people who loves having a go at cinema prices of food for the craic.... How were you planning on sneaking in 3 litres of cola OP ?

Nobody forced you too take the cola without paying for it. You chose to do so and new rightly it was not paid for.

But, as usual, nothing is ever your fault or your responsibility.

You were accused of shoplifting and admitted you just took the item.

    What's the question

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,051 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Is there even such a thing as a 3l bottle of cola???

OP, you know there’s a Creative Writing forum here?

Before that, on AH, his cat killed a neighbour's hens and his cat scratched a neighbour's car, but he didn't feel it was reasonable to be held responsible. There was also something about the landlord and the house being used for commercial reasons.

Country Spring, it probably went flat while the OP was in the queue

When the tesco machine won't scan an item for me it won't let me bypass 'unexpected item in baggage area to even pay for the additional items.

Anyway you stole the coke. Don't expect to be let back into the shop

Attention and to draw a reaction out of people. It's why the "I'm unemployed for several years" was thrown out there to draw a reaction from people who probably love a good dole bash.

My favourite line is about the ADHD and my kid doesn't like being told what to do. Funny thing about that is I know lots of people that have ADHD, have it myself and trying to study for things can be a pain in ass but it seems that every kid that suffers from ADHD and doesn't like being told what to do comes from family with ****ty parenting.

He also crashed his car. Not his fault. Fault of person who parked their car there.

His fertile cat is roaming free killing neighbours hens. Not his fault . Fault of neighbour

    What else had we

Im not sure if these stories are made up , because I don't believe that somebody not in full fledged receipt of welfare could even channel the level of entitlement and lack of personal responsibility that the OP has.

Hahahaha I guess you could walk into an audi garage and if you don't get any attention you could drive off with a new car. Sure there'd be nothing wrong with that. You weren't allowed pay for it.

Think you need to change title of the post to “I stole some cola”

You could have went back and paid for it.

You could also have told staff member you would go back in and pay for the item after the movie.
I am confused about the error message on the self service checkout,I thought no customer could finalise the transaction once the red light was flashing so how did you get around this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,420 ✭✭✭splinter65

    Don’t worry about it OP.

Did you ever think about applying to RTE to be a Fair City scriptwriter?

So you committed theft, do you not understand what constitutes shoplifting. Although I doubt the honesty of this thread.

You can't once the screen is locked as it needs staff to scan and key in code.

This means all their sweets etc were 5 finger discounted.

Has to be trolling. Between this and the car park story, this guy has plenty of free time and an active imagination.

Just looking back through some of your post, and I don't see anything out of character, you clearly have a defined pattern of behaviour so if it does go to court perhaps you could use this in your defence,

As others have said you clearly admit to taking and item from a premises without paying so it doesn't take a genius to work out if this is shoplifting
