    Hello

I can't work at the moment and am in the process of applying for disability. I was working till may this year and hope to renturn to work in a year or two after I have had surgery and treatment for health issues I'm currently dealing with. I have been renting a room for the last two years and will struggle to afford it on disability allowance. My rent is currently 550 a month. And I believe the max for my area (Limerick city is 270 a month).
I am a single person and rent a room in a house with one other housemate who is working.

Dose that mean that because my rent is over the limit I can get no rent supplement ?
Also since I'm not living alone I can't get any living alone allowance / fuel allowed ect ?

Its means tested, it doesnt matter if your rent is "over the limit" . If you are entitled to a payment due to a change in circumstances i.e, your means, you will get a payment towards rent.

    Im in a similar situation.
About to start a course and applied for BTEA and rent allowance.
My relationship with my housemate is hostile at best. But they want me to get his bank details, payslips for the last six months and his weekly wage

He’s simply never going to give me that info and so I’m expecting to be denied rent supplement.

No idea what I’m gonna do or if I can appeal it

I haven't applied yet was just trying to figure everything out and see if I'm entitled to apply. I have a good relationship with my housemate but I don't think he would be to happy giving me them details aswell. Would have to chat with him and see.

    It’s weird is t it?
Like how is your housemates income even a factor? And surely it’s against some gdpr thing to even ask for it?

I’m stumped too OP. I’d say apply for it anyways. I think if you’re living there over 6 months I think? The limits don’t apply. I could be wrong though hopefully someone will be along to help you out with a proper answer

Great thank you :) I'm very confused by the whole thing even though I spent most of yesterday trying to read up on it. Did think 270 per month rent limit for Limerick city was crazy. Don't know a single place I could rent a room for that little.

    There’s no rent supplement anymore.
It’s HAP now and you’ll have to get on the housing list before you get anything

Did you get that form from the CWO?

Sent out to me from SW with a load of forms for BTEA. You have to deal with your local council for HAP. Nothing to do with SW

Would you know anything about households benefit package / fuel allowed/ living alone allowance ect. Like I feel that I am living alone in the sense I was fully financial independent, not living with parents , partner , children ect. But I think I don't qualify for any extra benefits as I am not living alone , I'm in a house share, even though the person I share with and I are in now way sharing finances / dependant on each other.

Yes if your circumstances have changed since you started renting then you can get RA.
If I were you I’d get on the housing list though.

Had to to tic the council apply and get a letter confirming.
Probably pointless given I can’t give them all the info they need meaning my housemates pps and bank statements etc

You do know it's not actually 270 you get ,

It's 270 minus a minimum contribution from yourself to cover the rest

Why do they need housemates info if you and them aren't a cohabiting couple?

Exactly. Effed if I know? Even if it was a good mate loving with you you couldn’t ask them for 6 months payslips and bank statements. It’s bizarre and probably now illegal?

Yes I understand that. I just taught that they would only give some supplement if your rent was bellow 270.

If I get disability allowance at 203 per week that's 814 per month.
    814 - 550 rent = 264
    264 - 100 approx bills ( heat, electric, phone, internet) = 164
164/4= 41 per week for food
Which is do able just a little tight as I'm sure their will be unexpected expenses.

Just tell them that you are in a house share and it will be fine.
The CWO might come out to inspect you to see that what you say is true.

Just remember OP that once you sign up for HAP you loose your right to a council house as you have chosen to rent privately, that's what I heard from someone in my gaff who is on disability.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

This is not so. Once you include a letter from yourself with your HAP application stating that you wish to remain as “in need of housing” then you’ll remain on the list.

The CWO make it as difficult as possible. I applied, was succesful, I collected a few payments. Received the house visit a few weeks after applying. I had my daughters classmate over for a playdate. The CWO, immediately demanded all the child's details. Her parents details, demanded the parents send her a letter with all their details, pps number etc, stating how much they were paying me for childminding. I said, hold on a second, I have a child here on a playdate, who saod anything about income? She told me she would stop my claim if I didnt get this letter. My middle child happened to come in from being outside playing, then she proceeded to ask me who he was, I told her my middle child who is 9, she said strange hes very small for 9! I was so disgusted that this person could come into my home and carry on like that, I never collected another payment. Id rather struggle than have someone dictate to me who I could have in my home

Worth asking housemate to email details directly to SW.

If it was only that simple. I wish I could. It’ll never happen.

So weird. Just got a letter back from them with pages of my bank statements asking to explain bank transactions they’ve highlighted on the statments.
Basically a loan I got from a family member and used to pay off stuff and buy a few things I needed.

    Is this normal ?

    Yes.

All that the Department knows about your income/wealth is what you've told them, so if they see something that suggests that you may have income from another source they will definitely follow up on it.

You'll just need to clarify that for them. They may ask you for a note from the lender, which I assume you'll be able to get.

Should be able to. He lodged it into my account so his name is right there.
Yet they didn’t highlight that on the exact same statement sheet

Can someone explain how HAP works. For example, say the max HAP I can get for my circumstance is €600 and let's say all houses for rent in my area are 1200pm.

Does that mean the local authority pay the LL 600 and i pay the remaining 600?
