Enlarging Velux Window - Planning Needed?

Today, while standing on a ladder to paint the ceiling in the loft room, I discovered that we have a sea view. My other half came home and questioned the practicality of always having to stand on a ladder and has point blank refused to wear platform shoes.

We have agreed that if the window was a little lower, we could view the vista without the ladder or unfashionable footwear.

Will we need planning permission to have a bigger velux put it? What about if we get a massive velux, like the one pictured, installed?

the one in the link, yes.... as it affects your neighbours privacy.

a bigger one at eye level... debatable and probably not

Thank you very much for your reply.

Will the permission being granted be dependant on the neighbours’ reaction, they’re a fairly sound bunch and I don’t think they’ll kick off but it would be much cheaper to ask them first and then not go for thr massive one, if they don’t fancy it?

i cant comment on the likelyhood of planning , as thats a very site specific question../.. ie how far away are adjoining properties etc

a letter from them as part of the application would certainly be a help.

If the Velux is at the rear of the property then I don’t think planning is required. A query to the local planning office would give a definitive answer though.

To the rear you are ok with a standard Velux roof light.
The cabrio Velux are very site specific. I’ve seen them been granted in new developments where all the houses have them. I’ve also seen them being refused in existing housing estates.

Thank you all for your replies. I think I will give the local planning office a call, the window is on what I’d think is the front elevation, as that’s where the front door is, however it sits at a right angle to the street, so it might be described as as the side elevation.

What kind of information will I need to have ready for the planning office?

They won’t answer the question without drawings and an official section 5 application. Be better and quicker getting an opinion from a local planning agent.
