My idea. Own an island

Not sure, one of my nonsense thoughts.
How does one go about buying or taking over a part of land or house if it's abandoned.

I spotted a small island which all local says is abandoned so how do you actually get to own an abandoned house or island etc?

The trick is to find one that's self-sustainable. Then you start terraforming and sowing...

Read somewhere that John Lennon had an island here that Yoko sold after he was shot and the proceeds were donated to an orphanage or some sh1t.

Still...she was a fcukin terrible singer.

I feel like I saw this on an ad somewhere. I think you have to win the lotto.

They would have to be up for sale and then you can buy them.

5 for sale here if they are any use to you?

You could drive around and look out for neglected places or run down property and move in. Start squatting, put a horse or two on it, claim adverse possession if anyone tries to move you. Works well on bits of road, partially built industrial estates and the like.

    Not sure about islands.

Establish squatters rights isn't it but that is very long.

There was an island off the east of Cork for sale on Daft a few weeks back. Dunno if it's still there. Fairly hefty price tag, 7 million yoyos. Though I suspect that's probably a bit OTT for what the OP has in mind.

Twelve years apparently. Thirty for state property.

IF you move in and live in an old house for 12 years you become the legal owner of the property.
I knew a man who moved into a 3 storey house on stephens green .

Sometimes single people die, and the house is left empty and abandoned .
There,s no close relatives or partner left to take over the house.
The council can take over the house if its deemed to be abandoned
or a danger to the public .

    from the irish times website;

Squatters’ rights :The long legal road to recognition

Adverse possession, otherwise known as squatter’s rights, allows a third party to claim a right over land or property registered in someone else’s name on the basis that they have occupied it continuously for more than 12 years. The period of time is reduced to six years if the owner of the building/land has died and it has not been inherited by someone else.

To obtain squatter’s rights, a detailed affidavit must be sent to the Property Registration Authority. This must present indisputable evidence that the squatter is now entitled to the property.

Occupiers who have a signed rental agreement with the owner at some stage cannot make a claim for squatter’s title.

However, breaking into a house is a criminal offence as is trespassing on a property with the intention of damaging the property or stealing items from the property.

I remember reading that Ronaldo bought an island for his agent for his birthday or something. So I'm guessing hefty hefty wads of cash is your best starting point OP.

Theres 2 cottages off donegal for 75k.
You would share the island with a lighthouse, so wouldnt own it outright...

Even with squatters rights I doubt you could claim the whole island just the dwelling.

Brecqhou is proper private island living,

If you can't do anything up to that standard you have no business being on or near an island, let alone owning one :pac:

Whichever ass clown came up with those stupid "bought an island for Ireland" ads on TV should be beaten mercilessly with a scaffold tube. They are embarrassingly bad.

This one off West Cork was for sale for 130k in 2017. Would be a cool Airbnb.

Build your own Island, go out about 100 foot of the coast and build up the ocean floor with sand until it rises above sea level.. Pitch a tent on it. I don't think there is any laws in the state that could stop you from doing this or evict you from it..

Inisglora? Were the Swan people not sent there because it was in a three way tie for the worst place in Ireland?

Strictly speaking it was because it was one of the most remote places rather than one of the worst.

And, it's an awful holy place too.
