    Hi all

I bought a car this weekend but it hasnt been taxed in a few months - 5. it hasnt been used. Bought from an indie mechanic who was selling for a friend gone back to Poland. Car was parked in his garage for the last 5 months.

So the question is, when I go to tax it will I have to pay back tax or do I only pay tax from the date of when the vehical is in my name? I dont want to get screwd with paying extra.

Are there any necessary forms that il have to get the previouse owner to sign stating that the car has been off the road?

I tried the net, but couldn't get a straight answer..

    Cheers

Tax arrears disappear once ownership changes. You will pay tax from the beginning of the month that ownership change takes place. As soon as ownership changes you can either tax it online by requesting a new PIN or wait until the new registration cert arrives in the post and do it.

here's the exact quote from motortax.ie:

For a second hand vehicle (taxed before), motor tax arrears (back tax) become due from the beginning of the month after sale. For a brand new/imported vehicle, motor tax arrears become due from the beginning of the month after registration.

Monthly arrears are charged at one tenth of the annual rate and are provided for by Section 6 of the Non-Use of Motor Vehicles Act 2013.

Last time I did this, I went to Ballymun and brought the Receipt with me to prove date of purchase. THe process may be different now. Basically, they only ask YOU to pay with effect from the month of purchase, they're not interested in previous liability.

edit: there you go, bazz26 has the up to date info on the process.

Thanks guys. It was only tonight I was thinking about it & forgot to question him about the tax & who would be liable. It's €636 as is for the year so thought I was going to be done for the whole lot plus arrears.

The Minister would like to chase owners for Motor Tax arrears. Here is a few lines from correspondence with the Minister:
"In relation to transfers of vehicle ownership, I wish to advise that the Department, working as part of the Criminal Justice Working Group, is engaged in a programme of work (Master Licence Record) to investigate and improve efficiencies in the driver and vehicle areas including the change of ownership process. The project, once completed, will deliver an opportunity to put in place measures to collect arrears of motor tax from previous owners, which will need to be underpinned by legislation to ensure collection."

So Criminal Justice Working Group is wasting time on Revenue Collection topics. I despair.
It seems that in Ireland you must pay to watch RTE even if you don't watch RTE TV and pay Motor Tax even if you don't use the car on a public road and don't comply with the dizzying bureaucracy involved in declaring it off the road annually.
