One of the cars that I have to look after is up for its NCT soon.

Came with a towbar. Had it for over 10 years. Never towed anything.

Per image its got two sockets. Can anyone tell me what the sockets are for and what the NCT test ?

Extra point is for a caravan. Shouldn't be an issue

If the points are clean and connect correctly then it will pass once it all works...
If say one side doesn't it would fail.

The top Socket is a Caravan socket. This is intended to keep a Caravan Battery Charged and to keep the Caravan Fridge running. The NCT do not concern themselves with this one.
The bottom Socket is for Trailer Lights. They will usually check this nowadays, and if there is any problem they will fail your Car and the Socket must be fixed.
You surely know somebody with a trailer. Check the Lighting Socket to ensure Tail Lights, Brake Lights and Indicators all work.
If not, you have two choices. Either get it fixed....or remove the socket prior to the NCT Test.

Prefer not to take them off - apparently its coded into the car & I'd have to figure out how to remove the coding.......also might be an attractive thing to have if it were being ( bangernomics ) sold ...

Would a trip through the pins with a multimeter be worth while ?

You can buy a test plug for trailer lights.
Just go to ebay.co.uk and search for "tow bar socket tester"

I was getting my Primera tested recently (It has a towbar and socket) also never towed anything, But, While looking out the window I saw another car and the tester brought out a trailer light board, plugged it in to the car and placed it beside the drivers door and tested the lights while sitting in the car. I dont know if my car would have passed such a test as I have never used it but they never did the same to my car but they randomly do it. The towbar was in situ when I bought it also so I dont know if it's random or the tester ?
