Track day car transport

    Hi All,

I have my eye on a couple of MX5s in the UK with the view of bringing one home to become a dedicated track car. So no tax or insurance.

How ever I have heard that the track car would need full road tax and insurance should I want to use a dolly or A-frame to transport it to and from Mondello. I'm not going to go this route.

A full trailer will cost more than the car and use up alot of space at the house.

Are there any people that transport cars to and from Mondello on track day for a fee? Seems like a good business opportunity?

    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Wavey.

Where are you based? Guy local to me hires out a transporter for 50 quid a day! would prob do a better rate if you knew the dates you'd need one well in advance and could group book a few days.

Apparently you can use an A-frame....in your case you would have to get the MX's weight down to a max of 750kg, and your tow Car will have to be rated to Tow 750kg unbraked.....if your car is rated for less then start cutting more bits off the MX :)

Dollys and A-frames are sh1te to tow with. And the RSA don't like them at all.

A clean but cheap car transporter or flat trailer would be your best bet. You don't have to go full on Brian James tiltbed especially for a light handy car like a mx5.

With the wheels of the car being towed making contact with the road it would need to be taxed and insured. On a trailer or wagon it's not using the road so don't need anything, on an A-frame or tow dolly it is using the road so needs to be road legal.

    Read the link.
Once it's being towed with an A-frame it effectively becomes a 'trailer'.

That's the RSA's interpretation of the Law, not mine.

edit; just in case you can't be bothered to actually click on the link,
"When using an A-frame or Towing Dolly does the vehicle that’s being towed require motor tax and NCT?No. If a vehicle is being towed it does not require motor tax or NCT disc to be displayed."
