Old VW Touareg

I'm toying with the idea of buying an old SUV along the lines of the VW Touareg (up to about €5k).
What are peoples thoughts on these, obviously the high motor tax is one. There are a few online with price drops which look stunning.

I plan on maybe using for the 6 month 'Summer' period and locking up til the next season to save a bit on the tax.

With this green movement would future costs rise drastically ( hard to predict I know)?

Other similar SUV suggestions would be welcomed.
    Thanks.

They haven't aged well at all.

An X5 Sport would be my choice

Just had a look there, some fine models alright. Would the BMW generally be more expensive for parts etc than the VW?

Much of a muchness at that age.

Regardless of what you're looking at you want something with a fresh enough test and tyres as these machines tend to be hard on suspension, bushings, linkages, etc. Tyres obv not cheap on them either.

Complete opposite for me. I replaced a 2.5 TDi 05 Touareg with a 3.0 2013 and whilst I absolutely love they new one when I see a well kept old model i both admire it and wonder why i spent so much upgrading.

V1 Touaregs are well built, incredibly comfortable and bullet proof if you show them some love.

IMHO old X5's look ragged compared to a similarly aged Touareg.

I never thought they were pretty, new or old

I don't disagree, i don't think they are "pretty" but i do think they have presence and that they age better than X5's or Range/Land Rover's etc

If you do opt for an X5 Sport make sure the tyres are in decent condition. Replacing a full set will cost you a small fortune as the back ones in particular are huge, and they wear fast.

Depends on size. At that money you are talking the E53 which is 19" standards.

My mechanic says he likes the Touareg but parts are very expensive when things go wrong.

Rear tyres in particular ridiculously expensive and short-lived on X5s. My uncle had one and got tired (!) of spending hundreds every few months.

    Great car though!
