    Hi,
I recently returned to Ireland after 2 years in Australia,
I had a provisional that expired in Oct ‘17,
Can I renew it or will I have to reapply for a new one??

You can renew it. My last one expired in 2017 too. I renewed it only in January this year.

You only have to start the process afresh if your permit has expired for five years or more. See https://www.ndls.ie/about-the-learner-permit.

Hey Zepman, can I ask how you went about it? Possibly silly question I know. I'm in a similar boat as OP here. Did you have to go to a centre? All online option looks to involve that poxy PSC card, but just want to do this as handy as possible!

Following today's headlines, that will have to change as soon as possible as the Data Commissioner has deemed it illegal to require it outside of Social Welfare matters.

I have a PSC card but I was still ineligible to renew online, probably because of my residency entitlement (naturalised as an Irish citizen 2 years ago) not being updated on my PSC account or something like that.

So I had to get an appointment at the NDLS centre and get it done face-to-face like I had done the previous times.

I renewed my provisional a couple of years ago. Think it was four months off being expired 5 years.
I just brought the expired provisional, fee and learner permit application form to the NDLS, along with proof that I'd applied for a test, and had a new permit less than two weeks later. :)
