If they are to be eaten raw, they must be soaked.
    This rarely happens.
Not too bothered about the colour.

    I’m the opposite :p

Red for a sambo or salad, white for cooking.

Always red, the other one should be ashamed of itself.

Does it have to be for a sandwich?

    I'm fine either way

    Soaked? Why?

Is the red onion used in cheese and onion crisps?

    Soaked? Why?

To take away that harsh raw onion taste.

Count me out so - i like my raw onions oniony. If you don't feel like you've been teargassed then the onions are too mild.

As long as they're not raw I don't mind! Raw onions in salad/burgers/sandwiches etc are the devil.

P.s I love onions, just not raw ones.

Raw onions make a sandwich or burger imo.

As for the question it depends really I like them both but prefer white. Would generally use white when cooking bar certain dishes that specify red. For sandwiches I’d properly go for white always given the option but most delis only have red so I get that.

Voted white in poll as I do prefer them overall.

    Shallots.. :D

Really I use red in everything but Shallots are good too and white its a fine alternative.

    You need soaked onions.
    Lovely and mild.

Probably, raw onions that are still crisp just overpower everything else and repeat on me for the rest of the day.

    They retain their crispness.
    Less harsh raw onion taste.
    Lovely.

Ah lads. They are two entirely different things. White onions for cooking or caramelizing, red for salads etc. And why no mention of scallions or chives? Very poor thread.

Not if they are sliced very thinly. Then you just get a little pop of flavour but not too much.

White for cooking and I'll eat them raw but thinly sliced on a burger bap.
Otherwise it's red onion raw in salads or in a toastie.

the only raw onion i would eat would be scallions in a salad or as a garnish over a ramen or a thin slice of white onion in a burger.

for cooking curries it would be shallots and big mild spanish onions for everything else.

    not into red onions.

I love onions in pretty much any format.. raw.. cooked.. dunno if I've had them soaked but I'm sure they're lovely too.. sauteed.. fried.. it's all delicious.

I personally love the sting of a frest raw onion in most foods. And I've had plenty of stuff that has had both cooked and raw onions; really good tacos in el grito with sauteed onion and minced shallot/red onion and fresh coriander. GET IN MAH BELLEH.

To take away that harsh raw onion taste.

What's the point in taking away the very taste I'm looking for???

White all the way for me. I love onions in any form but find red Onions insipid.

Raw red onions soaked in white wine vinegar are amazing i love my raw onions too but just for a different take on them yum

I get this with red onions but not white. So I voted white. Half the time I think red are only used for the colour they add to a dish.
