    Hi all,

Just wondering what would be a decent 4x4 for very occasional use? I live in the Wicklow Mountains and have a car for daily driving but for inclement weather and things like pulling trailers and stuff I'd like to get a cheap but decent 4x4. There are loads available online but I haven't a clue what's worth buying and what's rubbish. Budget for this would be very small, ideally €4k or less but I'd stretch to €5k if it was worth it.

Daihatsu Terios or a Fourtraks. The First model Renault Koles is actually very good off road to if you can find one. Fiat Panda 4x4. Suzuki SJ if you can find one. My uncle had one for a while no idea if he still has it just seen it once had huge 4x4 wheels on it.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

(the extra gear/handbreak lever in the pic below)

very good on road, in snow, and the odd mucky field.
heavy tax though and not that easy on the juice

Thanks all, I won't be towing much, small car trailer full of logs every now and then will be about it. I'll look into your suggestions and see whats out there.

You will pull that trailer with most cars.....

I don't see the point in having a car and then having a spare 4x4. Just combine the both into an AWD crossover

Jeep Cherokee xj. Daihatsu fourtrak. Suzuki jimny/vitara.

Could even pick up a nice td5 disco for 3k ish.

Couple of nice hilux surfs on donedeal

If its only a small trailer for carrying light loads then get an Impreza and fit a tow bar. You'll pick up a nice 2006 RX model for under €2000 and then another few hundred for the tow bar.

This is a nice example with very low mileage. >>> https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/subaru-impreza-2-0-r-160-hp-new-nct-08-20/22536352 It has the hi/lo box if your pulling heavier loads and the 2.0 quad cam engine has loads of grunt.

I have a suzuki jimny for messing around up the wicklow mountains and it's perfect for it. Very reliable and easily modified (eg suspension lift for more ground clearance/ bigger off road tyres etc). Cheap to run and insure. I'd avoid the discovery mentioned above. Expensive to run and huge reliability issues.

Only thing to watch out for in a jimny is rust. They can be plagued with it. Behind the headlights, boot well, and floor.

Great yoke for the muck and snow!

Sandyford motors have a decent looking 05 freelander for e3,600

That Freelander is grossly overpriced! €710 road tax. A bag of sand at the most!

That's no bargain anyway for a 14 year old Freelander.
