    German text.

SPD and Greens politicians in Germany speak in favour of it.
Greens and SPD will probably be in Government next time in a Red/Green or Green/Red coalition and the way things are going it looks more like Green/Red than Red/Green.
CDU/CSU would not introduce this as they are supported by the German Farmers.

    Where Germany leads others follow.
Luxury VAT rate in Germany is 19%
Imagine 23% added in Ireland and being charged all the way back through the production process as value is "added" at each stage.

Vat is not added top Vat it is reclaimed by previous stage in process in any business. For instance a builder building a house buys materials at 23% and pays for labour at 13.5%, profession fees (engineers and solicitors ) are 23%. He reclaims all this money from the government and charges 13% vat on the total house price. That the way the system works. It would cause a once off price increase of 10-15% and would be passed onto consumers. In Germany they are already charged 9% so it would be a 8-10% price increase.

I am aware of how VAT works. The point is that it isn't the meat processors alone who will pay. It will be the customers and the farmer. It isn't magic magic.

Yes but the impression from your first post is that it would have a multipler effect. However Ireland is one of the few countries that charges no vat on some food stuffs. Most of the rest charge a basic rate, now the push is to charge a luxary rate which will add about 8-10% to retailer prices. But it will be across all meat, chicken, pork, beef fish etc. In the scheme of things it will have little effect on consumption

This same future government will push through ban on weedkiller and divert millions to helpfully inform people that eating too much meat is dangerous to their health and re-forestation and welfare initiatives for livestock.
Roundup would already be banned if one Bayerisch politician hadn't gone rogue and voted against its banning.

All the majority(who live in cities) know of Farms is what they see in Exposés on TV.
