The used cheap car roulette

So its the first time I've been looking for a car in a lower price bracket in a while, I'm not sure its worth it.

I'm specifically looking for an estate car, and my original thoughts of getting something older (2006 - 2007)cheap and short term have gone out the window due to the crap I've had to sift through.

So I've been looking at estates in the €3k to €3.5k, which brings me into the 2008 and up years, and things are not much different.

I've looked at 6 cars, and only one was any good.................except it isn't an estate which I really want.

But between rust (on a B6 Passat estate, which I was told was immaculate on the phone ) engine warning lights coming on during a test drive, questionable mileage claims etc etc, its easy how someone who is less wise to cars could get caught out.

The one car I liked was a low km, Passat B6 with a full service history, TB done and well looked after.....................a saloon isn't what I need right now though. I was still tempted as patience is wearing thin.

This is more of a rant than anything, maybe its a cry out to boardies who might be selling a genuinely decent estate under €3500 within reasonable distance from my house to contact me and restore my faith in buying cheaper cars. :D

Let us know where your house is, might be a good start :)

    If you're looking for something reliable-ish, I'd give a B6 a wide berth, they are a disaster.

What sort of stuff will you be carrying on it?

    Lets say, south east........:D

Oh, and I know the deal with the Passats. Had various Passats so nothing I can handle.

Mostly for weekends trips away etc. so family stuff. We had a hatchback Ford Mondeo Mk4 which in spite of its cavernous boot, actually struggled.

Not common but the 7th Gen Honda Accord Tourer has a massive boot and with the 2.2 ICTDI engine is a very nice drive.
The only sticking point is tax but post 08 the diesels got reasonable to tax, you might find an 8th Gen now but 3.5k won't buy a minter and the boot is a lot smaller.

I've not found any local to me but yeh, I definitely would consider one.

I know of an 08 passat estate coming up for sale in SE. Not sure of mileage but it has tax and NCT until next year. They are selling because they need a 7 seater. PM me if you want to know more.

    Mk1 Octavia estate:

Old school and fairly indestructible, not sure if that example is worth that sort of money though.

If you are going cheap and older I'd be inclined to go Japanese and non-turbo petrol if you don't do huge mileage and can find one.

I'm gone away from the idea of something older I think.........

I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that but the B6 Passat is no work of art and I don't see huge dissimilarity.

Ah to be fair that generation Octavia launched in 1996 so it’s considerably older looking than the Passat

I know but it still fits most of the criteria the OP is looking for.

My faith in buying old cars is restored

Just picked up a B6 Passat.

NOT an estate but the car was too good to pass up. I’ll just buy a roof box for it.

    2008 Passat 1.9 pd engine, 105bhp
    Decent spec
    235k km
    Full service history
New brake disks and pads all around
    New drop links
    Tb done at 215k km
    DMF done at 210k km
    Irish car
    NCTd for 14 months
    Taxed for 2 months.

Almost too goo to be true. But it was. And nearly bangernomics money. In fact if I had have got it for under two grand I surely would have won bangernomics.

People do take care of their cars. You just have to find them.

    Good luck with it

Nearly all the 1.9 passats I've looked at are BXE. I was trying to avoid them as best I could but from looking into it the issues are not as common as everyone thinks. Some of the cars I've seen we're high mileage, if it was going to throw a conrod, they'd have done it by now.

My buddies threw a conrod 3 weeks ago 275k on it. Fsh
Good luck sounds like a sweet car
