    Hi,

Sorry for all threads. On Tallaght route on Castletymon road there is ghost islands with continuous white line.
I observed people overtaking the buses but I always thought if it's continuous white line that it is not permitted. Can someone please clarify.
    Thank you

I presume the bus is stopping picking up, then Yes it's ok....slow moving or stationery traffic...
    Obviously only when safe..

To pass an obstruction yes it's allowed as said before if safe to do so....

If you see the bus ahead watch the stop if there are people there they may be a while but if it's just people getting off the bus will move off quicker...
Watch through the bus rear window for the doors or movement and try and time it.

I don't know if you came across it, but I had posted a question about a similar situation I encountered when practising for my driving test a few months ago.

Although it didn't involve any buses, there was a ghost island with a continuous white line on my side. The general opinion was that, it is indeed against the rules of the road to cross the continuous line and go into the hatched area, but in real-life situations, people do it so as to not impede traffic flow. So the advice was that if faced with that situation on the test, you could seek direction from the tester - “I know I shouldn’t enter the hatched area but if I do I’ll allow the traffic going straight to keep going.”.

Thank zepman. Your replies have been a great help to me.
I read your old thread and still confused lol seems a bit of a grey area.
My own instructor says go around but I am afraid in case its wrong. I know I should listen to him but afraid I would get an automatic fail.

Pic from google attached of the road

Say bus or car is parked or broken down, if you didn't pass you will fail.

If the bus has pulled in give good space, look in mirror and if safe then pass but as I said read the road ahead and if the bus has just stopped you should have enough time to be passing before it's even ready to move off.

There are door brakes on these so they take longer then ever before to pull away...

So if its just stopped letting passengers on/off should I definitely overtake(once safe)?
I'm nearly hoping I don't get that route now or there's no buses :)

Oh don't forget someone may hop off and run across in front of the bus.

That is very true. I would just rather wait behind the bus lol

From the pic, it seems to be quite a different situation than what I had posted. In my situation, it was a short ghost island that led into a right-turn lane.

In the scenario in your pic, I would actually wait behind the bus. The purpose of the hatched markings is to prevent overtaking (Rules of the road, p79).

Of course, if it's a broken down or a parked vehicle ahead, then it's a different situation, so I would be looking for a safe opportunity to go around it.

In any case, I would discuss it in detail with your instructor. As in, why wouldn't you be marked down on the test if you went around the bus in a normal situation like the pic shows?

This is a small section taken for the testers marking guidelines

(ii) Disregard for a continuous white line, but where an applicant is following behind a slow moving
vehicle e.g. a tractor, a cyclist, or a refuse collection truck, and overtakes on a continuous white
line a fault should not be recorded for ‘Traffic Control’. Where the applicant does stay behind the
slow vehicle because of the continuous white line, a fault should not be recorded for ‘Progress’.

Thanks all. Asked the tester today about this one (after test) and he said to overtake bus if it's just pulled in (if safe)
