ESTA expires while on holiday

I'm due to go on holiday to America next week. My ESTA expires during my trip. Expiry isn't an issue as I can still enter America so long as it's valid on the day of entry. I only renew it when I leave and come back again on another trip.

I plan on going over the border to Canada so not sure how this works. Do I have to renew the ESTA to come back into America on the same trip?

The 90 days you're allowed in America also includes any days spent in Canada. So I'm guessing the ESTA is good. But really not sure about it.

ESTAs only cover arriving by air

I discovered this when getting a train from Montreal into the USA a few years back. Had ESTA and thought all well - inspectors got on at border and I was let in but had to pay for a visa to enter.

    Anyways

    From ESTA website
Do I need to apply for a new ESTA if my current travel authorization will expire while I'm in the United States?

No. ESTA travel authorization needs only to be valid upon arrival in the United States.

so if you travel to Canada you will need to get a visa at the border to cross back in

If you are a citizen of a country that participates in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), and you enter the U.S. by land from Mexico or Canada, an ESTA is not required.

First entry via land border without a valid ESTA - You will be required to complete the paper I-94W form and proceed through a manual entry process at the land border crossing.

First entry via land border with a valid ESTA - You will not be required to complete the paper I-94W form, but you must still proceed through a manual entry process at the land border crossing.

Reentry via land border with a valid I-94W or valid stamp in passport from a previous admission – If you reenter the U.S. after a trip of less than 30 days to Mexico or Canada, you will not be required to obtain a new I-94W and your entry process is expedited.

Thanks, so all I need for re-entry is an I-94w visa.

Yes I think you'll fill it in when at border

You can check all this when leaving USA to be sure
