Very low weights - pointless?

    Hi folks,
    I started going to the gym for the first time in April. I am a slight person in their early thirties amd never did any exercise consistently before. I was going great at three days per week until I sustained whiplash two weeks ago. I went back to the gym within a few days as my neck was better but my shoulder hurt a lot after. Same after second time. I went a third time after waiting a number of days and I lowered all of the weights right down e.g. 5kg shoulder press 3x10 (everything 3x10), lat pulldown 15kg, low row 10kg, chest press 5kg and rowing machine set at 1. I was ok after that. Tried slightly increasing the weight yesterday and ended up having to soak in a hot bath as i thought i had hurt myself again. What i want to ask is:
    1) will doing such light weights be beneficial at all? Is there any point?
    2) even before the whiplash i felt like my left side was weaker and I'd feel the odd pull from left shoulder into left side of neck. Do all right handed people get that?

    Have you asked the doc if you should be lifting so soon? You may do more harm than good at this stage.

    Go to the doctor to confirm everything is ok. you dont want to be making things worse.

    But assuming youre a fully healthy person then light weights still cause exercise, however you should always be working to make things harder for yourself.

    The body will adjust to the same exercise if you constantly do it the same. Do in a few months if you are still lifting the same weight then it wont be doing as much for you as it did initially.

    I would recommend a session with a Physiotherapist, they will loosen you up and give you exercises to do they would probably be more qualified then a doctor when it comes to advice on exercises to do after such an injury.

    Hi folks, thank you all for the advice. I think i will book in with a physio even just for the advice on when can i get back to the gym. Most of the time I'm ok besides a slight twinge up and down in left shoulder so that's why I went back to gym. I thought i was ok but obviously not. I'm gonna give it a long long break either way. It was a certain rollercoaster i got on. Really messed me up! Never again! I'll get booking a physio. Good to know about doing same weights not benefitting after a while. I felt like I had plateaued at a v low weight anyway before the injury!
