I've been looking online at vw caddy life's, peugeot partners, tepee's etc. Thesr are the seater versions of the commercials. Most if not all are wheelchair vehicles, now thats fine with me, the space inside would be ideal for carry bikes, dogs etc but I've seen on one or two ads that if you use the car privately the tax is 1200 on a 1.6d, can anyone confirm?

What year are the Cars you are looking at ?
    Are they Automatics ?
Pre 2008 would be cc based and easy to determine the Tax Cost.
Post January '08 would be emissions based....but even still a 1.6 tdci at €1,200 per year sounds wrong.

edit: are you sure that these are not VRT exempt Vehicles and a new Owner would be required to pay the VRT if purchasing ?

another edit: Have a look at the likes of a Citroen picasso. Same engine and nearly as much loadspace.....

Most are manuals, just checked another random 09 peugeot dispatch (wheelchair accessible) from donedeal on motortax and it came back at 1200pr yr
, tax band 191 - 225. I don't think they are vrt exempt but could be wrong, I've seen a few for sale on english plates and price is plus vrt.
Wouldn't really be liking a picasso, id prefer a van style so I can throw gear, bikes, dogs in the back.

You're right. A Van Based Car would be larger inside than any similar sized Car. I would not be looking at anything that was converted to Wheelchair use though. You will be paying the cost of the conversion, and probably won't be able to fit a Towbar as the Rear will have been modified extensively.

There are always a couple of Berlingo Multispace (or Peugeot equivalent) or Renault Kangoo Cars on Donedeal. I'd avoid the Renault if possible.
I would still be looking at the Picasso, Ford C-Max though. Plenty more out there for less money and only slightly smaller inside.

    edit; this one is coming in at €280 per year;

The Despatch is bigger so the emissions may well be high enough to bring the motor tax up to that level. TBH anything Berlingo sized should be more than big enough for your needs. The Despatch is practically a mid-sized van.

I'll have a look at the multispace yeah thanks, cheap tax alright. Im going to be doing a bit of house renovating too so thats why the dispatch was more appealing size wise. Im not mad at all on french stuff so this is tough for me :D

Just 2 examples. Plenty pre '08 going cheap (even the 1.4 petrols) but tax will be a bit more. Also some Insurers prefer the newer stuff.
Just take out the rear seats for day-to-day (stick them back in for the NCT) and it's the same as the van....apart from the little bit of extra floor space:).
The 1.6 tdci in these is in a load of other cars as well (main example is the ford focus). They are known for Turbo issues if oil changes aren't regular , but from around 2012 this was apparently sorted out.

Other than that a couple of electrical niggles but all fairly well covered on various Forums on the net.

edit: anything Peugeot/Citroen in this Category with serious knocking from the rear is best avoided. It's usually the rear axle bushings and the cheapest fix is a refurbed axle from Poland. Not a major issue, just something to watch out for.
