affect on social welfare

I'm currently on disability allowance and in treatment for OCD.

My family don't know about this.

My grandmother left myself and my sister her house and some land years ago. My sister leaves there and I'm so used to that I forget it is half mine and when I applied for disability allowance I forgot to mention it on the form. Once I realised I did try to rectify it but was told told (by someone in the Department it was fine).

The sister's family has become too big for the house we've agreed to sell the lot.

Will money from the sale affect my disability allowance? Will I get in trouble for omitting it in the first place - I have no proof that I called them about it later?

I assume I have to tell them or that they would anyway? Does it even matter?

    Thanks

Yes you will be means assessed on it and to the best ofmy knowledge you should already be means assessed on it as you dont live there. The first 50,000 is disregarded, the next 10,000 is assessed at €1 per thousand, the following 10,000 is assessed at €2 per thousand and the remainder at €4 per thousand.

Freaky coincidence but we sold separately my plot is worth €50,000.

So what do I do? Do I write to social welfare and tell them that I didn't put it on the form and called later but was told to leave it?

Or do I wait until/if it is sold and tell them?

Is my omission serious? Would I be better off just signing it all over to my sister?

It is that I couldn't do with having the money but I don't want want to lose the disability allowance - it a big effort to be sensible and live within that budget. I the €50,000 was all I had I'd burn through it in a few weeks. I'd just as soon my sister had it for herself.

    Hi OP
Don’t worry. Just write to DA and tell them that you came into 50000.
I assume there was a solicitor involved in the sale of the land and you have a letter from a solicitor telling you that you about the 50000.
You need to send DA a copy of that letter.
You can go to your local CIC and get help to do this if you like. It’s free.

I haven't got to talk to my sister properly about it. She wants it divided equally but I insisted years ago that they house is hers. It is still in the early stages - no sign up yet.

So I don't need to tell Social Welfare until a sale actually happens? Will there not be hassle because I didn't put the property on any form?

Don’t do anything until you get the money. Then tell SW immediately. Don’t forget you can have 50000 and it won’t affect your payment but you still have to tell them you got it.

    Thank you.

    It is relief.
