Water leak at stopvalve in garden

I have a small leak out in a underground water stopvalve in my front garden. The water is seeping out between the valve stem and stem nut. It is the old style valve made of what looks like brass. I have no water meter and I am not registered with Irish water, the valve is also on my property. I would normally do small plumbing jobs around the house but as this is the mains water isolator and hard to access I don't want to go at in case I make it worse. just wondering should I call the council / Irish water or would a plumber fix for us. Thanks.

Is there a mains water stop-cock out on the footpath outside your gate, or is this the first stop-cock directly from the supply from the road?

It would be the first stop cock from the mains supply, no stopcock out on the road.

This is a picture of the valve i think, its leaking from the packing gland , the packing gland looks like it would need a 28 or 29 mm box spanner to remove / tighten.

Best best is phone Irish Water (01)7072828 and tell them there is a leak on their stop-cock coming into your property. See what they say about it.. I imagine that they are still responsible for it.

Tighten the gland nut yourself, first leak fix is free, keep that for when you really need them.
You never know, it might even be tomorrow .

Are you definitely with Irish water? And not a local group scheme?

Thanks for the reply lads, I phoned Irish water, they told me that they will not go on to private property and that I will have to get my own plumber to fix. If I had a 28 or 29 mm box spanner I might have given that packing nut a tighten.

Very true and half the problem is that it was installed poorly which makes it hard to work on.
