Experience of Energy Efficient Timber Sash Windows

Looking to replace some retrofitted aluminium windows in an edwardian terrace with something more in keeping with the building.
I'm doing this as part of an extensive retrofit to improve the building's thermal efficiency while installing MHRV.

So I suppose my question is, can a good level of thermal performance and air tightness be achieved in a sash window that looks convincingly authentic?
Obviously double glazed units will never look exactly right, but I'd like to get as close to original as possible.

If anyone has had any experiences with specific suppliers they'd recommend or I should avoid then please PM me. Otherwise, just general thoughts and experiences would be appreciated.
