Never too late, especially if its mainly a hobby.

Start basic and look a few youtube videos to get an idea of whats involved and see if you like it. See what training is available locally and go and chat them about the course. Try it and if you find you don't like it you've lost very little and if you do like it, its a hobby for life :)

Personally I didn't start tinkering with cars (mechanically rather than electronically) properly until my late 20's because I thought everyone else knew more than I did. Then I said feck it bought a cheap car and started by servicing it myself and doing bits and pieces as they were needed. I now have a track car that I look after myself and have a much better understanding of cars overall as a result. The only regret I have is not starting it sooner.

    Go for it ;)

If you're only going to do it as a hobby it's easy.
Start small, maybe buy a project car, or simply replace the electrics in your own car - get a better stereo, build out the sound system, put an ipad in as GPS/sat nav etc

Build up your basic electronics knowledge would be the best way to get the basics. I would get an Arduino kit with lots of different sensors and understand how inputs/outputs work, both analogue and digital. Most cars for the last 10+ years are mainly just microprocessor systems connected with busses (CAN/LIN).

If you find it intersting get a cheap oscilliscope, I looked at the price of these recently and was shocked with how cheap they were, this would allow you look at communication system busses.
