Can a person on disability allowance be a carer and be entitled to carer allowance?

I know someone who is out of work due to mental illness who has moved home to look after his mother. The father is in denial or simply cannot cope with the mother's condition.

My wife has suggested to me he should apply for a carer's allowance as she suspects the son is struggling with regards money, but while we know his illness is genuine might Welfare say if he can look after someone else then he should be out working.

I don't want to suggest something to the man though that he would not be entitles or that would cause him further hassle.

As I said above I should have Googled before posting - what I meant was I found this same information.

    Thank you for responding though.

I see that you also had previously posted that you did not think people on disability could claim to be carers. Disability means different things - physical or mental issues that prevent someone from being in a workplace doesn't mean they can't be help in the home.

Thank you but it is not for benefit.

It really is just someone I know.

Don’t know how to bring it up - barely know the guy.

    There was no lecture,

You say you “know all about disability” and it is clear from my original post that I do not. And we both made the same mistake that people in disability might not be able to claim carer’s allowance.

There is no need to get huffy - especially since we both had the same doubts.

There is no getting huffy about it. But why you had to bring up a post which I deleted when i found i gave the wrong info is beyond me.
    End of conversation from me

    You are still getting huffy.

Just because you changed the post when you found out the information was wrong does not mean that you changed you changed your opinion that people on disability couldn’t get carer’s allowance.

Therefore nothing wrong commenting on that opinion.
