Looking at blocking off this fireplce at home, was planning to slab it and put a little shelf inside, herself wants a candle in there etc - my worry is, how do I finish the ceiling part, do I need ventilation? What will I do about potential water ingress

You would want a gaurd on top if you don't have one. Other than that blob on the slabs. Maybe put a bladder in there to stop a draft

Just at the same in our house. At the same stage as your photo so sorry for jumping on your thread.

Planning on capping off the chimney at roof level and covering hole with plasterboard with a vent in the plasterboard. Do I need to include a chimney balloon for drafts or will capping off chimney suffice. Is the vent in plasterboard an absolute must?

You can get a chimney plug in a builders providers, it's a terracotta plug that sits loosely into the chimney pot on the roof, keeps the rain / wind out, out but lets a little air circulate,
Just cut a hole in a piece of plaster board for a vent cover. for the" roof " of your new fire place...

    Hi All,

I am planning to block fireplace that was not used for years to eliminate draft and heat loss. It's a bungalow from 90s. I know if this is not done properly it will lead to issues. I was advised that C cap cowl on top of chimney is needed to prevent birds and rain getting in. Then on the bottom I was planning to use some kind of insulation that does not absorb moisture (don't know yet what to use) also is it ok to just use enough to block the "throat" ?then I was planning to block with plywood and plasterboard fully. So that would mean that the bottom is fully cealed off but air should still get in from the top. There are no air vents, at least I didn't see any. Do I need to drill them in the attic??

You can install this yourself or get someone else to install it in 5 mins.

We used a chimney sheep in the chimney then too so it can breath. Stops all the noise.
