A few years ago he was replaced by Gary The Grey Squirrel, who reduced deposit account interest rates, promoted Lotto gambling over prudent saving and closed hundreds of rural post offices.

Anyone remember the plastic piggy bank from BOI that was a globe of the world.

I'd buy those squirrel stamps now ...

That photo really brings back memories! We could buy the Cyril stamps from our teacher in primary school. We could also bring money into school to deposit to our Henry Hippo account in Ulster Bank once a week.

The CU has brought in saving limits and are pushing credit. Not much better than the bank's now.

Over time non-indigenous banks came in and competed for territory and took over. It was until the recession of 2008 when the pine Marten came in and reset the balance between grey and red squirrels

    Late 80s/early 90s for me.

Yeah, the Hippo and the acorn savings stamps were around in the 80s, as was the money box shaped like a beehive (AIB?).

I'm fairly sure the bee saving one was First Active.

I had Henry Hippo from ulster Bank. He’s still floating around somewhere in my parents’ house. And I had a freaky thing with black hair from the Cork Savings Bank. I think it was supposed to be a crow.

And I remember a savings box from Bank of Ireland (I think) which had a combination lock rather than a key. Can’t find a picture online though. But I did find this, we had this also

Edit: the combo lock box wasn’t BoI, it was AIB. The little tray to the front had a notepad where you could write down your savings. You took the card from the front and pushed it into a slot on the side to open the box. I do remember a combo lock savings box though, so who was that?
