Hi guys, I’m currently looking at purchasing a new car, and have my eye on a bmw 2.0 316D 2010.

The car has fairly high mileage at 160k miles. Basically my question is, are these cars reliable? I’ve heard horrible things about timing chains but I don’t really know.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes common to have timing chain issues around 2010. Also the 316d is the bargain basement model and isn't very good to drive. Have you looked at a 320d? It has the performance it's meant to, the 316d is a detuned version to come in under certain tax and price brackets.

I wouldn’t be too pushed about it being the standard model, as it’s handiest for me for insurance as I only have 3 years no claims bonus. My main worry is that the car will cost me thousands in repairs.

Get it checked out by someone that knows what to look for. It could be a money pit, it could be fine. I've had 6 BMWs and they were all fine never cost me much at all. But they were all serviced on time, both before I bought them and while I had them.
If you're worried about repair bills it's probably not the car for you. It's nothing special to compensate for bills to be honest. But from an independent mechanic it shouldn't be much more than others all things being equal.
I'd look at Audi A4 as well I think it's nicer than the BMW in 2010 guise.

How reliable any 9 year old car with 160k miles is will depend on how it was maintained over the years by it's previous owners. However BMWs of that era are not without their issues and some of these issues can indeed be expensive to put right.

I missed the part about 160k miles. How much are you looking to spend OP? Its pretty hefty mileage and you sound like you don't want much in the way of repair bills, which is fair enough, none of us do. If this is just for the BMW badge I wouldn't do it you'll be disappointed.

I was buying my sister in laws 318i petrol a 2008 car with 50,000 miles on it. The previous owner was a diplomat and both the first and second owner got all work done in Frank Keane's. Two days before I was due to take ownership the timing belt stretched / slipped and the engine is a write off . Bad luck for my sister in law but lucky for me. The car hadn't a mark on it at all and the leather interior looked brand new.
