Was lookin at a 2014 car in a Subaru garage and everthing seems good on it except that the NCT is up. What do you think guys. Would you buy a used car with no NCT from a franchise garage? It has 50k miles on it.

    What’s the car?

Will they not NCT it for you?

Ask them to get it NCT'd.

Did you ask them? Chances are that they’ll NCT it for the new owner.

Ask them to nct it, if they said they wouldn't then walk away

And make sure that they NCT it before you hand over any money, it's easier to get stuff done when they want your money.

Too much of a minefield, especially a franchised dealer not arsed NCT'ing it.

If it's a diesel Subaru I'd just forget about it regardless of whether it has an nct or not.

If it’s Carroll and Roche, they say in their ads that the NCT will be done.

This is common practice and not necessarily a red flag. Any proper dealer will NCT it as part of the sale. They just wait until someone buys it before putting a fresh NCT on it.

Cheers. Lads. I will only buy if they offer to NCT before I hand over cash. My first car this so was unsure on the common practice.

Fiesta is a great first car. Just tell them you’re not in a rush for the car and will collect once it’s done.

Did I miss where the OP said it was a fiesta?

Which is a stupid system since it'll still be valid for the same amount of time if they kept the NCT current.

They don't have time to go for NCT with cars that just sit there.
Some dealers have some serious amount of cars, it's just not feasible to keep them all up-to-date.

Not really, from a practical business perspective, large dealers have alot of stock on their forecourt and simply don't have the time or resources to be sending them down all at once to the NCT centre. You also have the NCT who may not have the slots available to test every car that a large dealer needs testing on their forecourt. So they have to prioritise what is being sold over what is unsold on their forecourts.

Also since they introduced the voluntary testing system, it can be tested for 1 or 2 years from the date of test depending on the age of car so a fresh NCT as a condition of sale is a big bonus to both the dealer and buyer.

How do they do test drives if the vehicle isn't road legal? A trade plate doesn't cover it.

You would have to ask the dealers that.

Does the ad say "sold as seen"

    A meaningless phrase.

How so? It implies no warranty, surely if there's nothing wrong with the car they'll NCT it?

I thought it was a legal requirement for a vehicle to be sold with an NCT?
I suppose they are taking their chances anyway regarding test drives, if anything happens, the potential buyer would have a lot to go on.
