A long stage today; a bit bumpy in the first half but then pan flat. An opportunity that the sprinters will surely not miss.

    Roche crashes
    14:35
A spectacular crash by Nicholas Roche (Team Sunweb) but he is quickly back on his bike.

I think they could shorten some of the flat stages. 90% of the time a breakaway goes up the road and is reeled back in by the Peloton and there's a sprint finish. All that effort for what we know will be a bunch finish!

Didn't the TdF have 2 and even 3 short stages in one day a couple of decades ago? I think there was a strike over it in the end.

Shorter stages would mean longer transfers in the evening so it's a catch-22 situation. I think the stages are shorter than they were back in Sean Kelly's time for example. There also seems to be less pan flat stages compared to when I first started watching cycling in the 90s, but that could be my hazy memory.

Roche was in the very last bunch over the line. I hope the crash hasn't caused any real injuries for him.

He seems to be grand. He said it took him ages to get a new bike and then he got another puncture in the last 6 km.

Fair play to him for cycling 200km + with a broken thumb as his crash was early in the stage.

Indeed, he'd a few cuts to his face too.
