Something slightly sporty for around €6k

Now that I'm back from my travels abroad (for the time being) and starting a job soon I'm now looking at picking something up.

    Criteria is:

    - Budget of up to around €6k

    - No coupes, mpvs or suvs

    - 2008 upwards though would consider a 07

    - Preferably petrol, 140bhp minimum

    - Manual or Auto (no CVTs)

    - €750 tax band or lower

    - Willing to import from UK for something special.

Few cars that I'm excluding straight away are the Civic, Mini, Polo and the 159.

Have a few on my mind already such at the ST Fiesta, Clio 197, Corsa VXR and the 1/3 series 6 pots. Still doing my homework on them.....

    Cheers

Want to start this up again but with a slight change in criteria. Gone off the while hot hatch thing for the moment......Still looking around the 5-7k range.

Finding the S40 I got a couple of month back for bangornomics money too thirsty on the motorways. It really cries out for a 6 gear at 120 imo. Gladly drive another one but not petrol.

Anyways I'm defiantly leaning towards a post 08 diesel this time around, tax man got enough out of me with the Mondeo at 1200 pa.

Don't necessarily do diesel mileage but I'm sick of filling up with petrol and paying nearly 10c more as well for it. Also fancy the low end torque.

I'm still keen for e90 3 series but I still dunno if I want to take a gamble with the N47 engine. Not many autos for sale either within my budget (which shocks me) and most of them for sub €6k are over 140k miles though I suppose for a diesel it's okay ? Aul lad picking an msport one up next week but hes done well finding it and it's condition. See how I like it then.....
Would consider a manual but heard they can be iffy in BMW's but lower tax and better mpg. Is it worth dropping back to a 07 with the M47 ?

The other one I'm interested in is the S40 and S60, preferably R-Design and at least 160bhp. Kind of confused with what D3 and D4s are and whats 4cyl and 5cyl. Feel like I'd be pushing it for an S60 money wise but I'd consider borrowing more. Probably go manual but how are the autos in them after 2010 ?

    Thanks.

Why did you exclude a Civic type R?

Get the e90 in a 3 litre diesel and skip the n47....(also do skip the manual.. its rubbish(

Had one already though not a type r. Great car but too firm with all the ramps in Dublin. The 1.8 is probably the best engine after the K20.

That's really what I do want but don't want to say it out loud :p. Would almost certainly have to bring one in from the UK and insurance worries me as well. The aul lad was refused insurance from his own company for a pissy 318i m sport he was considering the other week, can't dare to imagine how I'd get on with even the 325d at 26 years old. :pac:

So you start with allegedly wanting something sporty, but it's got to have a soft suspension on account of the ramps, but actually what you really want is a carcinogen spewing diesel.

Get a Humvee - that will clear the ramps and it's small and sporty.

I said something "slightly sporty", like the way I said just Civic not Type R as you said. Also like the way I have said that my criteria has slightly changed but you probably didn't read that right either and are just here on some high horse it seems.

Should also look towards the Humvee yourself, would be big enough to carry that chip on your shoulder.

E90 330/335d and get it in auto.

The manual box in an e90 320d isn't rubbish.

It's a zf box which shares many similarities with the zf boxes used in the 4 and 6 cylinder petrol bmw's of the time.

Gearstick slop is their one fault.
When it comes to firing through the gears it's a really good gearbox.

Manual bmw diesels from the noughties are one of the few diesel cars that can be driven like manual petrol cars.

That said the autos are very good too.

    Audi A5?

The one below is within budget but it's only the 180bhp model rather than the 210bhp one.

You could also get them as a sportback i.e. 5 door if that is more suitable.

Edit: There is also an 2007 S3 on dondeal at the moment which might be more along your lines (although it is slightly out of budget):

    Last Edit:

If you would reconsider the tax there is a Mazda 6 MPS (260bhp) within budget on donedeal too.

You've excluded the one car that absolutely fits 100% your criteria :confused::confused:

All you're left with it's a diesel BMW, realistically :D

    Or an Alfa!

The 320d MSport probably fits the requirements. I’ve a 2010 184bhp one and as 2 litre diesels go it’s fairly sporty and handles well. The ride is a bit hard on country roads but nothing too serious.
Find one with timing chain done or better, allow about €1700 to replace one. They usually need to be replaced after 100,000 miles.
I’d rather be recommending you a 3 litre petrol though.

Only Alfa I ever liked was the 156.

Drove the aul lads new one the other day and was very pleased with it. Plenty of poke and the automatic felt great. His is lowered but doesn't feel like it going over ramps etc surprisingly.

The 3.0l petrols are actually the same tax as the 6 pot diesels I think. But I read on one of the bmw forums before where someone had both the petrol and diesel and when they done the figures the diesel was 41% cheaper to run/own.
