Hey folks. My wife would like to change her car she currently drives a 2013 Fiesta 1.25 that is approaching 120k miles (ex hire car) but is in very good condition and has FSH

She has a 20km drive to work and back each day and a 400km round trip about once a month to see her folks.

She wants something a bit bigger so probably looking along the lines of a Focus, Golf etc. Budget is not huge, 7-8k tops plus whatever her own car is worth.

My question is what could I likely ask for her car in a private sale and secondly what would be the best car for her to buy? She is not fussy, her main requirement is more room as there are often three kids plus baggage on board.

    Hi,

Basing that your Fiesta has 120k Miles and not Km and it being a Style facelift model I'd say 4,5 to 5k max in a private sale, reason being people are scared of mileages over 100k miles even though the 1.25 is well capable of doing another 100k. This said Fiestas are always popuar.

Total budget is then about 12k

You won't move up massively in years but will get a bigger car with less miles. I presume that you'd like to stay petrol given relatively low mileage. Petrol family hatchbacks will be scarce compared to diesels so you could switch to diesel even though you have low miles provided that your journeys are not in stop start traffic.

I would stay away from the 1.0 ecoboost Focus as early models did have reliability issues.

Have you consider the Civic. It won't be the fastest car with the 1.4 petrol but will be roomy and relaible.

Thanks, I will have a look at the civic. I was hoping for €4000 plus for the fiesta. It is spotless but I know the mileage will be an issue

Might have a look in the North and do some calculations on whether it is better to buy there or here. Is it much of a muchness at this stage?

I went from a fiesta to a focus + was happy with the change. More room in car + boot. I needed a diesel though for amount of travel I do daily. If you want to stay with petrol than another car might suit better. My car very reliable + nearly 10 years old.

It's going to cost you more than 4k to trade up to a Focus. Your current car has above average mileage for a small petrol car so it going to be harder to sell on so worth less. If it's a main or large dealer they won't even retail it, they will offer you it's trade value and sell it onto the trade (small/part time dealer network).

Sorry what I meant was that I was hoping to get around € 4000 for the fiesta in a private sale. We would put another € 7 - € 8 k with that to get the best car we can.
