Carers Allowance Means Test

    Hello,

I’m just looking for some advice.

My daughter was assaulted and now needs long term care.

I have a pension and have mortgage arrears.

I was approved for Carers Allowance but it’s less than €50 a week.

I won’t be able to look after her I’m barely able to cope financially as it is.

After I pay my mortgage I have €125 odd a week. I have debts so there was nothing factored in from that section.

Is there any point in appealing?

    I’m very worried.

    Thanks for your time.

Sorry to hear about your daughters tragedy. It’s a horrible world.
For you only to get €50 Carers Allowance means that you have a lot of income every week. Carers Allowance means test is quite generous.
    Are you single or attached?
the first €332.50 (or €665 for a couple) is disregarded.

Hello thank you for your kind words

I guess i would of had a good job but I don’t see my pension as my mortgage and arrears and work credit union are deducted at source.

What’s put in my bank account every week is around €160 before bills and other debts.

Applying I didn’t know my mortgage wouldn’t be accounted for.

I am thankful of the summer grant as we can make her room accessible for her needs.

I’m not ungrateful I’m just at a loss to know how I can keep us both going on near €50 extra a week.

    Thanks for your time

I’m so sorry for you. No, outgoings aren’t taken into account. I really would highly recommend you speak to
    https://www.mabs.ie/en/contact/
Who will help you to manage your outgoings and possibly organize for you to amalgamate them to one monthly manageable payment. They’re excellent.
Incidentally, did you leave work to care?

Are you getting the SWA while you wait for your Carers Allowance to be processed?

    Yes

You could work but no more then 15 hours a week as you are a full time Carer, and your income from work gross less PRSI and travel expenses will be deducted € for € from your SWA.

Ok...let me pose another question what if I decide not to go ahead with the carers allowance and go back to full time employment..will I be penalized for receiving the SWA??

No not at all. You said you were caring for the person. The Caree’s GP said that the caree needed full time care and attention. You said you were providing it and in the application form described the type of care you were giving, the SW inspector might have called to the carees home to check a few things out, but now you’ve returned to work full time.
