Irish flag to be taken down over Leinster house

It's been reported that the Irish tricolour is to be replaced by the rainbow/LGBT flag over Leinster house for the next few days in conjunction with pride.
The European flag will remain however.
My feeling is that no flag should fly higher than the national flag, if any flag was to be removed it should have been the European one
I'm all for pride and the celebration but I think this is one step too far .

Why does it matter so much?
It's only for a few days and I think it shows how progressive we are as a nation.

Just checked a few websites and none of them mentioned the Irish flag being removed.

The question why not the Euro flag instead of the tricolour is valid. Are we more European than Irish?

Well if the tri-color isn’t up then the others aren’t flying higher than it so you should be pleased

Is this thread brought to us by the same op as the one giving out about the pride flag on the gpo? Vaguely remember seeing that but didnt pay much attention

Reported where? This is just another bull**** story that will outrage some people.
Even when the story is false the sense of outrage exists which feed the notion that the world is all PC gone mad.

Im all for people celebrating pride and all, but a government building should just have the Tri-Colour and nothing else. No Pride, Papal, US, Pirate flags or anything else.

I'd agree sure most people involved in pride just want to be treated like everyone else right ???

So like everyone else no need for a flag

    That's their idea of funny?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,998 ✭✭✭✭Peregrinus

I'm pretty sure that the national flag is only flown at Leinster House when the Oireachtas is sitting, and on St Patrick's Day and Easter Monday. If that's so, any flag flown during the pride parade (which is on a Saturday) wouldn't be flown instead of the national flag; it will be flown at a time when otherwise no flag would be flown.

Dublin city center is jam packed from head to toe in rainbow everywhere. Every single shop, building, street etc etc. Given how little attention every other issue recieves...as a once foreigner Id get the feeling the Irish care only and exclusively about LGBT and nothing else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,942 ✭✭✭topper75

The blue rag combined with the LGBABC whatever you are having yourself flag seems to be the new combo for those who despise nationalism. The tricolour is offensive to them.

A leading U.S. corporate in Limerick flew this combination when Trump was in the midwest lately.

I don't really have an issue with the rainbow flag per se (homosexuals suffered much over many decades), but as a 'replacement' for the tricolour - I would.

When the prime time debate about adopting the rainbow as the national flag happens, I suppose you'll have a discussion point.

Take a spin up to Sallygap and pop a tricolour up on a stick.

You’ll be happy, and nobody else will give a polite shyte.

As a gay man, I think it's a stupid Idea to take down the tricolour, putting up that embarrassing rainbow flag...

Seriously it's an absolute ridiculous Idea, who cares it's pride, proud of what being not straight...

What an embarrassment, no pride celebrations in my life.

I stay well away from that sorded scene, guy's prancing around dressed as dog's and in bondage gear...

    Feck that

Nah, there are still a few of us Nordies under cover down here! What we need is MORE flags! Stick up the Pride flag, a few Jolly Rogers, one for each of the provinces, maybe an Ivorian flag and an Italian flag while we're at it.

Come on lads, I'm getting withdrawals!

You should definitely ring the OPW and shout at them.

They're probably bored and could do with the excitement.

Or, in the spirit of not reading stuff and just ranting anyway, ring Bord Gais for no reason.

Pride day is now more tacky than paddy's day.

I'm cringing at all the companies falling over themselves with pride stuff when in actual fact it's just a PR exercise organised by a marketing department looking for a thumbs up on social media.

A proper protest in support of stopping violence against LGBTQ etc etc should be the aim of the day and not the tacky parade followed by a p1ss up that makes a night as busy for emergency services as Halloween.

That sounds exciting. And paddys day should just be a mass to celebrate St. Patrick. Christmas too.
