I was recently given a quote by installer for an alarm installation. As part of that quote there is a monthly fee for a self monitoring option which basically amounts to getting notifications on my phone. Seems unusual, has anyone else seen this? I would expect somerhing like that for fully monitored but seems unusual for self monitored.

Most have free options HKC systems do not. They have charges for the app & monthly/annual charges to use it.
How much are you being charged?
Shop around would be my advice.

8 euro a month for this aritech alarm. Of which, I assume some of it goes to the local company. They are a reputable company. I presume if I cancelled that there would be no way to enable it myself?

On these systems there should be a free option without ongoing subscriptions.

There is, it is called the HKC GSM-Q.
PAYG Sim and off they go.
Rather than the false economy of relying on a router.
