I bought a lexus Hybrid, a couple of months ago and is now due a service.

There is 66k miles on the clock, is there much point is getting a main dealer service?

280 for a main dealer service, which appears to only be a oil change and a hybrid health check.

How old is it? If it has a full Lexus SH and is only a short time out of warranty I'd be tempted to keep it main dealer to avail of any goodwill down the line.

It's a 142, it was bought with a lexus service history.

I think the service includes extending the battery warranty by 12 months.

    This!

I was told that hybrid warranty can be extended to 10 years with annual main dealer health check.

Suppose it'd make sense to cover the battery

I’ve got the same year gs hybrid, you can get the hybrid health check at the main dealer, I think it cost €30, if all is ok then they give the certificate and as far as I remember 12 months guarantee which is mileage restricted I think.
Genuine oil filter and sump plug washer in the dealer costs me €12.50 , it is important that the oil is the correct grade, I think it’s approximately 6 liters of 0w30 needed but it’s ok to use 5w30 which has various prices, if you’re unable to do it yourself get a local mechanic at much cheaper rates, if you supply the filter at least you’ll know it’s genuine which is important

I rang a main dealer last year and to extend the battery warranty you get the hybrid health check done only for 80 and you will get extended warranty for 12 months do this until 10 years old. Info on there site about this

Multiple Lexus dealers are now saying they only do the health check as part of a service. Not sure if this is policy now.

Can I ask where you are getting your lexus serviced, I rang main dealer and the want over 500 euro for a full service including hybrid battery check. I have a 151 is300h. Cheers.

You should also look at Toyota dealers who are not Lexus main dealers but are Lexus Authorised Service Centres.

I don’t think they give the 12 month extended warranty though,

    Prices gone up again apparently.
I just rang for the price for the 6 year full service.
They said they'll do it for the old price though.
I was going to do it myself but seeing as its the biggest one since new,I like it to be an official one.
That's it though, I'll be doing my own from now on.
Got a free courtesy car at least

That's an important qualification - regular Toyota dealers cannot do the Hybrid Health Check on a Lexus (well, they could, but the computer locks out Lexus for commercial reasons)

Having said that, I didn't know such, eh, hybrid (sorry;)) dealers existed.

Yeah,I rang a few Toyota dealers before and they refused to do it.

Toyota in Sandyford serviced my 142 IS300H in the past - although I do also get a Prius serviced there.

Not sure if they gave me reasons why not but I think they pretty much just flat out refused.

The Hybrid Health Check can be done up to 15 years from date of first registration... it was previously 10 years..

I've been doing my own services on my 132 plate IS 300h since I bought it last summer with 45k on the clock. Third service coming up now @75k. Engine oil and filter is easy but a special tool is need to get the oil filter off. Can get one on EBay for €20ish. Use 0w20 oil, fully synthetic. Costs approx €70-80 for good aftermarket brands and oil filter is €10ish for a good brand. Did the spark plugs @65k. Approx. €25 per plug but have a 60k miles service life. Doing the diff oil and auto box oil at the next service. Lexus specify that the auto box oil is 'lifetime' but the car is over 6 years old which is well beyond what they call lifetime. They even have a procedure for changing the auto box oil on the technical website.

I got the hybrid health check done in Lehanes in Cork this year for €65. Don't think it's worth doing mechanical services at the main dealer. A good independent mechanic will be cheaper for the same thing and a yearly hybrid health check prolongs the hybrid system warranty until the car is 10 years old.

I've always serviced my own cars but as this one was the most expensive and newest car I ever bought and had service history, I liked the idea of keeping it going.
Just for my own satisfaction really.
And as tax and running costs are so low I don't mind (or at least didn't mind) spending some on the car.
There was a time when I was under a car every few weeks but in the 3 years I have this I've nothing to do to it. :pac:

Never knew they would do the hybrid health check on it's own.
That's a serious game changer for me.
Thought I'd seen somewhere that it was only done as part of a service or that it wouldn't be guaranteed if the car wasn't serviced by lexus.
Don't know where I got that from, probably read it on the internet when I got the car first.

    Special tool for oil change?
Is it a lexus specific tool?
I have a strap and a few filter sockets.
Is it one of those you mean.
I also have an oil extractor.

I have been wondering about the transmission oil.
Again when looking for info found that it's a sealed unit and isn't mentioned at any of the service intervals in the manual.

I'd prefer if I could change it.
Do you have a link to the procedure on the technical website?
What milage could it do with a change?
There's 53k miles up on my car.

Pretty sure the Sealey VS7112 does the job, basically the filter housing unit has notches on it at specific points to open so needs a tool with them in it.

Apart from the hybrid check, is there anything specific needed on the Lexus that can't be done in an indy garage like any other car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭zilog_jones

I also started servicing my Prius myself after the warranty was up, there's really not much different from a normal petrol car except the battery fan intakes should be cleaned every few years, and to be extra careful when working on the brakes as just opening the driver's door will turn on the accumulator pump (which you don't want happening when changing pads!).

I also just get the Hybrid Health Check done at a Toyota dealer, which I believe now goes up to 15 years for both Toyota and Lexus (was previously 10 years).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Multiple Lexus dealers refused to do the health check unless as part of a service earlier this year.

This is the oil filter tool that I bought. Has a 3/8" drive but i use and adapter as I only have a 1/2" and 1/4" socket set: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F183436108010

I have a 4ton hydraulic car lift so oil changes are easy for me. An oil extractor should work just fine too.

Theres no recommended service interval for the gearbox fluid. I've done a lot of reading on Prius forums and guys there recommend every 5 years or 50k miles. Mine is 6 years old now with 75k miles so a good time to change the gearbox fluid. I'll PM you the gearbox change instructions if you want them?

Yes, I've seen it is listed as a separate item (€50) by Toyota Ireland, but not Lexus. Though going by almostover's experience it may be up to the Lexus dealer's discretion if they will do it separately.

I'd be very interested in these too if you don't mind.

Some other bits that might be useful to other IS300H owners:
    • The Lexus Owners Club (LOC) is a good source of information: link
    • Writeup in LOC on gearbox oil change: link
    • Official Europe IS service schedule: link
    • Spare Wheel story: link

I'd love a proper lift but would mean buying another garage.
If you wouldn't mind sending the gearbox oil change info, that would be great, thanks a million.
