Looking to buy a 2008 Prius. Seller states this: “battery light is on”

    What does this mean?

The battery no longer holds electricity. It is no longer a hybrid. Just a petrol car. €4k roughly to make it hybrid again.

    Oh feck, is that it.

I thought it may be something like 1 little part or cell of the battery was gone.

On the other hand could just be a disconnected wire or a blown fuse or something simple. But I'd imagine they would have fixed that.

Does anyone know a rough cost of bringing a car like this to a main Toyota dealer and getting them to do a health check on the battery? (Or is there even such a thing)

    €70 I think (that’s when you get a service)

The battery pack can be had much cheaper from specialists. There’s one in Clare.

To be honest though it’d want to be a very very cheap car to justify the hassle and you’d want to go in with your eyes open.

Thanks. So maybe without the service, could be 100 Euro.

I’ll be staying away from this car anyway. But more so enquiring for going forward, sounds like it’s a worthwhile exercise to do when buying a Prius privately.

    Hi

From what I hear the Prius hybrid is very very very reliable.

Is the AURIS hybrid just as reliable as the Prius?

They are pretty much the same car underneath the bodywork, same goes for the Lexus CT200h.

Grand. So the reliability of Auris and CT200h is just as good as the Prius. Nice to know.

Keep in mind the drivetrain is the same, but the CT is still a Lexus when it comes to suspension parts, body panels etc.

Ah ok. So the Lexus May have more expensive parts. And suspension could be a bit tighter maybe.

They’ll be more expensive if they need replacement.
Incidentally the suspension is on the hard side.

I do about 10,000 km a year. Fair Mix of driving. Motorway, short runs, national roads.

How much would I spend on fuel in a year with a Prius? Ball park.

    About €900

Isn't this going to be the same if not more expensive with EV cars, take the tv show topgear two weeks ago, the used Nissan leaf it featured had a range of something like 36 miles before the battery was flat, what does a Nissan leaf battery cost and what is the second hand price of a EV with dead batteries.

Would it not be half of this? For 10,000 Kilometres. Not miles.

What kind of fuel economy are you expecting ??

320 ltrs of petrol (@ €450 per annum) would be 3.2 ltrs per 100lm which is NEVER going to happen on the stated style of driving.

While 6.4ltrs per 100km (or €900 a year) looks a bit high but would be far far closer to the mark that €450.

About 60 mpg in the Prius. From what I read.

    So about 4.7ltrs per 100km.

If your doing a lot of motor way driving your not going to see that.

I would say 5ltrs per 100km would be a decent ballpark

    so over 10,000km that's 500 ltr's at €1.43 ish current prices that's €715

Thanks. Looked back again. Actually, I only do 8000 KM a year max.

So maybe about 600 Euro a year on Petrol

Honestly nobody here can give you accurate answer, only a best guess. A Prius is hardly going to rob you anyway, it's not a thirsty v8 and if your only doing 8000 to 10000 km driving be year are fuel costs really a major hang up?

    Hi

    See this car:

    https://www.donedeal.ie/view/21970252

Would the ride be harsh on these tyres and this spec car? (Especially On Irish roads)

I think they are 17 inch tyres.

    Hi :)

OP, you really need to test drive the car yourself as information from on here or any forum can only go so far and not a substitute for a test drive. What I might think is comfortable on 17" you might think is too harsh. Ultimately you will have to decide what is comfortable for you. So best thing to do is go test drive one on regular wheels and then one with larger wheels over the same surface.

    I have a 07 prius for 3 years.
    Fuel consumption is between 4.5 - 6 l/100Km
I did a trip to France 1200Km and had an average of 5.4l/100Km, highway most of the trip(110-150Km/h).

Very reliable car, with nothing to do on it except regular oil/filters changes.

3rd gen are supposed to be better.

Do buy a prius if you like them(a little more expensive than other cars of same age) but more reliable and fuel efficient.

I know yeah, but just wondering if people have any comments on the ride that may own one. There are No gen 3 Prius really near me so will take a few hours round trip to go and see one.
