Van won't go into 5th gear

    Hi guys.

Driving up the n9 an hour ago and felt a savage vibration coming through the gear lever if you pushed it slightly (literally a couple of mm) forward.
Took the kilcullen road and on the other side of naas the van wouldn't go into 5th. Clutch and all other gears are grand. There was no whining, grinding, banging or knocking noises...Just a kind of a crunch and it pops back to neutral.
Just wondering is it a new gearbox needed?

Van is 2010 1.6 Citroen Berlingo. Very well minded and serviced with 120k miles on the clock.

Could be something as simple as the linkage. Hopefully that's all it is, OP.
    Good luck.

Looking online and it does seem to be a problem. Is it a big/costly fix?

If it's the gearbox it won't be cheap

    I priced a 2nd hand one in Traynors...€200. Reasonable?

Get the gearbox oil checked first.

Have a 04 1.9d partner here that started popping out of 5th when the box got low on oil.

Refilled it with new stuff and it was grand again.

Just to update...I drove the van up to newry to give to my father. The entire way from Dublin to newry in 4th gear...55 - 60 mph seems slow but I left later in the evening to let the traffic ease off.

The oul lad drove off in it and it never missed 5th gear the next hour!! Or the next fcuking day!!

What the hell could have made it not go into 5th gear then suddenly decide it would??

Anyway...It's getting a replacement box from a low mileage breaking van, as well as a clutch and a full service!?

5th gear is obviously a problem. He probably able to work it into gear. Older vehicles took more finesse in fear changes and so those of us do remember that.

When I drove a truck you’d be able to move carefully through the gears without clutching at all, just matching speed revs and carefully applying pressure to the stick and the gear would select with no grinding at all. Often practice through boredom

It's 2010!! I tried coaxing and cajolling it but no dice. Anyway it's getting good going over now!!

The problem is you have to pay a man to fit it.
If they give you a warranty and something goes wrong they eithre refund the money or give you another gearbox and you pay your mechanic to fit the new one

Damaged or worn synchro rings sound plausible

The father ended up picking me up a gearbox for £100 from a low mileage van. Going to get the clutch changed as well and a full service. Bread and jam for a few weeks now!!
