Sporty car €6-8k

Looking for a car recommendation, would be great to get some advice from the expertise here.

Had been looking at A5's recently but budget had to be reduced from 12k to the 6-8k range due to an unexpected cost.

Car would be used for short runs maybe 3 times a week with a 400km motorway round trip once a week, so maybe diesel would suit as DPF probably wouldn't be an issue?

Would be looking at something German preferably, hatchback/saloon/coupe but not too sure what to look for. Had a golf before and wouldn't be against going with one again but would love to go for something a bit more interesting? No kids and no issue with going with an older car.

Any help would be massively appreciated!

Lots of decent A4 in that price range, 3 series also. Avoid any Bimmer with the N47 engine.

Very nice petrol 3er (had one of these, can vouch for around 30mpg average, 40mpg doable on the motorway)

Thanks for the reply, petrol engines to the way to go on the 3 series then? Any one in particular?

Not necessarily, and petrol after about 2010 start to get thin on the ground. More expensive to run as well, I was getting 500-550km from a €80 fill which is not good at all if you're doing big miles.
With BMW you also have to accept that although theyre fantastic to drive, things WILL go wrong.

That particular engine is the most common Diesel in that era though and has notorious timing chain issues which can be expensive to fix and in severe cases result in the loss of the engine.

Often overlooked and under appreciated IMO. They are a good alternative to a 3 series or A4 in many ways. They drive no better or worse, but are lovely inside in comparison and look much better parked up/in traffic just because you don't see so many of them

Very tempted by the 159s, would it be worth bringing a mechanic out to have a look with me?

Any idea what they’re like reliability wise? Often hear that Alfa’s have terrible reliability but I’ve no experience myself.

That A4 wouldn't be a bad shout, so long as the auto doesn't put you off. I have an '09 Audi 2.0 TDI and its great for long journeys, averaging 5.5 l/100km (50ish MPG). The above one would have the added poke and comfort due to the S-line package.
I have just over 335,000 kms on mine and no issues so I wouldn't let the mileage put you off

I'm no Alfa expert so I'll let those with more experience of them chime in. General consensus is though that the 2.4 litre is way nicer than the 1.9 litre.

I had the 1.9D and loved it. Never really felt short changed. And unlike what the previous poster said I didn't replace it with a Nissan, oh no. I got a full fat Toyota Avensis......

Alfa I loved, gearbox had to be done as is typical, clutch done at the same time but the front suspension was a pain to keep right. I'd have another if I'm honest.

I never noticed that.....really bad for co2 rate on a diesel.

The tax on that A5 is based on the CC of the engine not the Co2 rate, it's an April 2008 car.

And that is exactly how I went from a 166 V6 petrol to a Hyundai sonata.... But I never will forget or regret my lovely crazy Italian

Something like this might fit the criteria, the 170bhp ones certainly have a bit of poke and look pretty well as well. I've got a 140bhp petrol one which is good fun to drive.

Of the two id steer clear of the 1.9.
Gearbox isn't up to scratch whereas the 2.4 has a totally different box and is pretty much bullet proof.

I am on my second 159, had one 1.8 petrol and now a 1.9 jtdm in ti spec, they are a great car, make sure to buy from an enthusiastic owner and you won't go wrong.

Bought this 2.4L 159 on Monday lads!

Very happy with car, few little bits need to be sorted but it's in good shape for its age and comes with an extensive service history. Drives lovely, was coming from a 1.6 petrol golf so the power is a welcome change!
