Check engine light came on and it's a cat converter error. I tried those fuel additives and blasted down the motorway with no luck. Looks like I'll have to get a new cat.

I can get a cat online, so will only be paying for labour. Any idea what the general price is for labour for this job? Hate walking into a garage totally clueless.

    Ford Fiesta 2004 Petrol 1.2

    Thanks folks.

Catalyst efficiency faults don't necessarily mean the catalyst is faulty. Probably be better to get a second opinion on the car than jump straight into buying a cat yourself, if all you've tried is fuel additives.

You might get a mechanic that won't fit spurious customer supplied parts.
If something fails in 6 months, was it their fault, or the part?
Don't buy a part unless agreed with the mechanic first.

The guy I go to takes my spurious parts. Covers himself on the receipt too and I'm fine with that. You didn't even answer my question.

I'm guessing you're a mechanic. Or you know mechanics losing money not being able to gouge customers who bring their own parts.

Faulty O2 sensor maybe? I was thinking it's a fault with the cat as I was driving her for a couple of weeks with a misfire.

If you get all the work done by the same mechanic why don't you trust his quote for the job?

Will you bring the car somewhere else if I, a stranger on the Internet, say its a 5 minute job and your mechanic says it's a 2 hour job. There's also the issue that a mechanic who doesn't do the job often will take longer than a mechanic swapping them out every day.

And before you accuse me of trying to gouge customer's I'm not a mechanic or work in the trade. So it'll take 5 minutes to change the Cat, if a mechanic charges you they are ripping you off.

Or just maybe Biko was trying to be helpful?

Jesus wept. Dial it back about 11 notches! Biko is simply saying that some mechanics won't fit customer supplied parts because they can't guarantee the quality and there is zero 'come back' on them with the mechanic as a result of that.
