More new electric vehicles have been sold so far this year than 2017 and 2018 combined.

Sales of the Corolla have overtaken the Golf for the first time in (probably) ages. Getting rid of the separate Auris brand for the hatchback helped figures in no doubt. And they're 91% hybrids. There's also been the new Camry and Lexus ES which are hybrid-only over here, though they haven't sold much but have both surpassed Prius sales.

Kona Electric sales are the most impressive though. And Tesla are outselling Alfa Romeo :)

Looks like those wonderful no-brainer self-charging yokes are leading the posse. ;)

Wish I never had to plug my car in. So envious of all those Toyota hybrids out there.

You could follow the Healey Rae approach, you never plug the Leaf in and just replace the battery every time it goes flat!

The world would be even a "Better Place" with battery swaps. Why did no one think of that brilliant idea? Oh wait.

The idea was good, but he was too far ahead of his time :(

Haven't had a chance to check that video, but there have been trials in the past and they don't work too well - adding wear and tear to a big heavy high-voltage battery assembly is asking for trouble, e.g. shorts! Once rapid charging is down to <10 minutes it'll be a non-issue.

Being so dismissive of petrol hybrids isn't doing you guys any favours - it's an easy gateway to going full EV, they're not diesels, and it is helping resolve the Irish motorist's irrational fear of driving an automatic among other things. Let's just leave Toyota Ireland's "self-charging" marketing in the toilet, where it belongs :)

I don't think we are being overly dismissive. I've yet to hear of anyone in here ever saying society is better off with a diesel car than with a petrol hybrid.

Hybrids work and in most cases, they are extremely reliable (unlike diesels). They don't use failed new technologies that cost a fortune to fix when they go wrong (unlike diesels). They are far more efficient in urban areas than diesels. They emit far fewer bad particles than diesels.

Every diesel Avensis traded in for a petrol hybrid Avensis is a gain for all of us
Every diesel Octavia Dublin taxi scrapped and replaced with a Toyota Prius hybrid (or PHEV) is a win

And this is happening a lot. So we all win.

That all said I for one am disappointed we still need to buy hybrids. Better than diesel but so much worse than full EVs...

In fairness, it was after we had bought my wife's Toyota self-charging hybrid that I started considering a full BEV as my next car. They are a good gateway drug!

I never have plug my diesel motor in either, just fill her up every three weeks.

I was curious about this actually.

I pretty much only charge at home, and I plug the car in every night. I'd guess I spend about 10-15 seconds a day picking the cable up and plugging it into the car, so about an 60-90 minutes per year charging my EV. If I did the average 13k per year in a 7l/100km petrol/diesel car and spent 5 minutes at the petrol station each time, it would take about 15 fills or 75 minutes per year at the petrol station.

Obviously if you need a lot more fast charging that changes the numbers somewhat, but thought that was mildly interesting.

My mate never has to fill up as he cycles.
