We,re looking at a car at dealership near sheffield, all very nice, only prob is the seller is insisting that he cannot sell direct to irish address. I need to give him a friends address in uk to process the sale, im not sure if the carwill be registered to the friend, and i then work away with the friend to get it to ireland. I never had this palaver before. Is it common, and whyre they doing it?

Just buy somewhere else, they obviously don't want your business. Bought from Motorpoint in January with no issue.

Yeah BMW won't allow UK franchises to sell to non UK addresses it had to be processed there first.

Its not just one dealer it was all BMW dealers in the UK and it wasnt just Irish addresses it was all non Uk addresses.

I was looking at a 3 series at bmw cooper uk and was told they only sell to uk customers, I picked another car from bmw sandal Huddersfield and they had no problem selling me the car.

Op take a look at Sytner BMW, they’ll have no issues dealing with an Irish address.
I bought my BMW from them last year and they sourced an Audi for my sister this year .
    Fantastic guys to deal with.

Never heard of BMW UK doing this. And if it is policy someone should tell the dealers as most have no issue selling to Irish customers. Ridiculous carry on.

Hi thanks all, spoke again this morn, they wont register the car to my buddy., simply want his postcode for paperwork - either the sales guy was thick, or was playing thick...company policy blah...anyways, car is good value, so i'll play along, cheers all...

Mercedes UK apparently have a similar policy. The UK address will simply be used to pay motor tax (6 months min. I think - you can claim back the remaining 5 months) and send out the V5C form which you will need to register the car over here.

Head over to the Importing from the UK - definitive guide (Q&A) thread if you have further questions - plenty of folk will have had similar experiences.

If they are part of a dealer chain then it's probably their HQ policy not to sell to an Irish residence. The UK postcode is probably their way of working around that policy. Just make sure you get the car's entire V5C registration document as you will need this to VRT the car over here.
